WEST CARROLLTON — West Carrollton police and fire officials are reminding residents to be safe while having fun during the city's Fourth of July festival and fireworks display at Wilson Park.

"Last year, people started to leave because of the rain," said Leanne Nash, fire prevention officer and emergency medical services coordinator. "The problem is that they have to pass near the hot zone when they leave, which is very dangerous."

The hot zone is where fireworks are ignited.

Once visitors enter the low dam area near the Great Miami River to view the fireworks, they must remain there until the show — co-sponsored with the city of Moraine — is finished, or the event is canceled.

Following the event, police will direct all traffic exiting the low dam area onto North Alex Road.

"This is an effort to better control the traffic in the area," said Deputy Police Chief Doug Woodard.

Authorities also are reminding the public that air-born fireworks are illegal in Ohio.

"The only ones that are legal are the four S's — smoke, snake, snap and sparkle," Nash said.

Anyone caught with illegal fireworks may face a first degree misdemeanor charge and up to a $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail, Woodard said.

A portion of the bike path along Hydraulic Road, near Alex Road, will be closed for firework preparations starting at 2 p.m., July 2, until the morning of July 5. A detour will be in place.

About 4,000 people attended last year's festival, which this year runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 4.

"This will be my first West Carrollton July 4th Festival and fireworks. I'm looking forward to them. Both are well known throughout the area," said city manager Brad Townsend. " Hopefully, we'll have great weather and a great turnout."
