Springboro Council names five citizens to community service board

SPRINGBORO — Mike Woodward jumped at the chance to be part of the city's first community service board.
"Many people think Springboro is a community with endless wealth, while we all know there are families struggling to make ends meet," Woodward said in his application letter.

After a light response to initial postings, the city received enough applications to appoint the volunteer board, created as a result of discussions started after Councilman John Parise suggested the city should clear snow from the aprons of senior citizens' driveways.
Woodward, a manager at Standard Register, was among five members of the inaugural board appointed last week by Springboro City Council.
Cindi Green, a manager for the Hamilton County Department of Job and Family Services; Cathy Herbenick, retired from the American Red Cross; Jim Marsh, an Air Force officer; and Mark McKinney, a marketing manager on a Miami Valley Hospital Foundation board; complete the volunteer board.
Councilwoman Sheila Lairson is expected to be the council representative.
The snow removal problem remains unresolved, but will be part of what the board can confront as it begins its work.
Rather than rely on city staff — already burdened with moving snow from public roads in the city — the City Council decided to set up a volunteer board to make referrals for such services from a list of willing providers.
Now the board is expected to develop a list of referral resources and survey the community to identify those in need.
"The opportunities are endless when you think about it. I want to help Springboro 'Give Big,' " Woodward concluded his letter.
