School headlines: 'Student applications due by May 31

WAYNESVILLE — Applications for student admission into Waynesville Junior and High schools should be submitted by May 31. They are available in the superintendent's office, 659 Dayton Road.
Students in grades 6-12 can attend school in Waynesville for the 2008-09 school year under the district's open enrollment policy. Students who do not reside in the district can apply to attend tuition free.

Applications will be acted on by Aug. 1 and written notification will be made to the applicant's parents and resident district superintendent.
Preschool holding open enrollment
LEBANON — Lebanon United Methodist Preschool still has student openings for the 2008-09 school year at Lebanon United Methodist Church, 122 E. Silver St.
The school is a cooperative school with morning and afternoon classes for 3-year-olds on Tuesday and Thursdays and 4-year-olds on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

MUM accepting summer registration
MIDDLETOWN — Registration for Miami University Middletown is going on for Summer Session I, May 19 through June 27.

Schools promote sobriety, literacy
WAYNESVILLE — The following are recent news items from Wayne Local Schools:
• The SADD organization hosted a mock drunk driving car crash April 25. Students watched Miami Valley Hospital's CareFlight helicopter land behind the school as the Waynesville Fire Department responded to the mock crash.
• The Waynesville Elementary Literacy Team is sponsoring its second annual Book Swap the week of May 19 to help promote summer reading. They are seeking donations of gently used books at the third-, fourth- and fifth-grade reading levels. Collection boxes are in the school lobby through Friday, May 9.
• The Band Boosters raised more than $1,100 during their fourth annual Band Booster Waffle Breakfast. Half of the funds will go to the Lisa Summers Memorial Fund.
In other band news, Community Calendars are again on sale and are $7. To add a personal listing, an additional $1 will be charged. New this year are pocket calendars for $6. Both can be bought for $10.
• Waynesville PTO is seeking cookie dough sorters today, May 8. To sign up, call Missie Adams at (513) 897-0826 or visit www.waynesvillepto.org. Volunteers and new officers also are needed to kick off the 2008-09 school year.
• The high school's junior class sponsored a memorial for the late Kelli Withrow by raising funds through the sale of pink Kelli Withrow bracelets.
A ceremonial tree planting of a red buckeye was held May 2 in front of the middle school in Withrow's honor.
