Football female 'the best kicker, period'

HAMILTON — There are a number of things that make Hamilton High School senior Jessica Weislogel unique.

For starters, she is the only four-sport athlete in a school with more than 2,000 students.

She also is the only HHS student who owns a silk sash that reads "Homecoming Queen."

And among Big Blue football players, she is the only — well — she.

It's a special distinction, but it comes without special circumstances, save for a separate dressing area.

"Being the only girl is not an issue to her and it's not an issue for us," HHS coach Jim Place said. "She's part of our team, and she's the best kicker, period."

Weislogel is 17-of-18 on extra points this season and 3-of-5 on field goals, with a career long of 35 yards. And her 26 points rank second on the team to Chris Tarrant's 30.

"I felt a little out of place at first, but not anymore," Weislogel said. "The guys all joke with me that I look like a man in the pads and that they're going to treat me like one."

The lone awkward moment, Weislogel said, came when she and linebacker Denicos Allen tried to share a hug after being named homecoming queen and king, only to have their shoulder pads get in the way and knock off her crown.

Earlier in that game, Weislogel kicked her second career field goal, and afterward she was asked what the bigger highlight was, making the kick or being named homecoming queen.

"They're both pretty cool, but my ultimate goal is to score a touchdown," she said with a laugh. "I've got six or seven trick plays drawn up, but I haven't been able to get them approved by the coaches yet."
