You may find money on web site

HAMILTON — Tammy Adams, Butler County Area 1 Court owes you $60. Charles Smith, you have $27.54 waiting for you at the Butler County Treasurer's Office.

Butler County has $1.5 million in unclaimed money just waiting for its rightful owner, and now anyone can find out if any of it belongs to them by clicking on the Butler County auditor's Web site.

"There are various reasons that a person might have unclaimed funds," said Auditor Roger Reynolds, such as forgotten bank accounts, overpayments to government entities and unknown rebates.

Residents can search by name through more than 23,000 records by going to www.butlercountyauditor.org and clicking on "unclaimed funds" on the home page.

"Hopefully, people will go to the Web site and check for their names, as well as the names of family members and friends," Reynolds said. "It may not be much money at all or it may be a substantial amount, but whatever is there rightfully belongs to that person."

If the county owes you money, you can download an "application for unclaimed monies" from the Web site and return it to the auditor's office fiscal services division along with a copy of your drivers license.

"I want to see this money returned to citizens as quickly as possible," Reynolds said.

The posted debts only go back to 2003, and unremitted money older than that has already become part of the county's general fund, auditor's office officials said.
