Falling trees cause havoc

Springfield, Ohio — Sunday's windstorm tossed debris from trees into roads and wind felled the traffic signal on East National Road in front of Wal-Mart.
A yard sign managed to stay in the ground in the 1600 block of South Limestone Street, but a tree a couple of houses away didn't fare as well.
Earl Wheeler, a resident of the two-story apartment building at 1622-24 S. Limestone St., was just finishing Bible study when a tree fell in front of his home, damaging a corner of the roof and landing in the yard next door.
"It just split and fell," said Wheeler, gesturing toward the large tree that clipped the roof of his home and the roof of the house next to it.
Down South Limestone Street, across from South High School, Crystal Brown had a similar feeling when a tree fell in front of her home.
"I felt the whole house shake," Brown said, as she tried to get in touch with her landlord via cell phone. "I came out to look and I saw the tree laying across the yard."
In the 800 block of Burnett Road, a piece of a home's chimney was knocked off, said resident John Milton.
Winds in the area were measured as high as 78 mph, said National Weather Service meteorologist Myron Padgett.
