Miami Hamilton celebrates 40th anniversary

HAMILTON — In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Miami University Hamilton will host a Ruby Scholarship Gala scheduled Sept. 6 in the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center.

The Hamilton Campus opened Sept. 8, 1968.

"We're pulling out all the stops in celebration of 40 years of partnership with the greater Hamilton community," said Michael Carrafiello, Miami Hamilton associate dean and event coordinator. "At the same time, we look to the future with great anticipation as the next 40 years hold great promise for Miami Hamilton."

Historically the ruby — one of the four precious stones — is associated with a 40th wedding anniversary which led Miami officials to chose a "Wizard of Oz" theme complete with ruby-slipper candle holders, Emerald City décor and a yellow-brick road for the event.

The cost is $100 per plate. Business attire is requested. Proceeds from the event will benefit need-based scholarships exclusively for Miami Hamilton students.

"We serve a number of students from middle- to low-income backgrounds ... many of whom are first-generation college students," said Dean Daniel E. Hall. "Often they need financial support and we are excited that the gala is going to be focused on raising scholarship monies to support these students."

To reserve tickets for the Ruby Scholarship Gala, which begins at 6 p.m., or contribute to the MUH need-based scholarship fund, contact Carla Ledford, (513) 785-3020, ledforcd@muohio.edu.

Campus officials also have scheduled a 40th anniversary community picnic from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 at Schwarm Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted for the student scholarship fund.

Activities will include opening the time capsule placed behind a cornerstone in Mosler Hall during construction of the building.
