SPRINGBORO — A new state-of-the-art facility held a grand opening in Springboro on July 17, bringing virtual technology to residents worried about cancer screening.
Digestive Specialists' Springboro location, at 77 W. Eleanor Drive, actually opened its doors to patients for consultations and procedures in April.
The ribbon cutting formalized its move, which according to the physicians, means the Dayton area's only facility for virtual colonoscopy, the latest development in colon cancer screening.
Virtual colonoscopy uses imaging technology to give a physician a 3-D image of a patient's colon, yielding the same information as a traditional colonoscopy. However, patients undergo no anesthesia and no scope is used. If polyps are identified, a regular colonoscopy removes them.
Virtual colonoscopy is recommended for high-risk patients who cannot tolerate colonoscopy because of their medical conditions.
For other patients, colonoscopy is available for anyone older than 50 — or those younger than 50 with a family history or other risk factors — to be screened for colon cancer.
The Springboro office is the fourth location for Digestive Specialists. They surveyed patients and spent time reviewing patient feedback to design the office.
Digestive Specialists Inc. also has established a GI hotline, which can be reached at (937) 534-7330. Schedulers answer calls from patients and physicians' offices, and schedule appointments, procedures, and free educational appointments to explain patient prep and colon cancer screening options.
The office is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and has weekend hours.
Digestive Specialists Inc. is a group of 15 gastroenterologists with offices in Kettering, North Main, Huber Heights, and Springboro, and with satellite locations in Beavercreek, Troy, and Springfield.
