Seaman Karla Comparan
Navy Seaman Karla L. Comparan, a 2004 graduate of Lakota East High School, recently received a Letter of Commendation from the commanding officer while serving as a color guard team member assigned to Naval Base San Diego.
Comparan was instrumental in the coordination and completion of more than 60 ceremonies for active-duty and retired service members, Department of Defense personnel and their families. Comparan joined the Navy in September 2006.
Private First Class Dustin Chambers
Army Pfc. Dustin Chambers, a Mason native stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., received his Screaming Eagle, or 101st Airborne Combat Patch, a NATO Medal and an Afghanistan Campaign Ribbon in a ceremony May 17 at Bagram Airfield. Chambers is deployed to Combined Joint Task Force-101 at BAF, Afghanistan, in support of NATO operations and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Air Force Civilian Mark Smith
Department of the Air Force Civilian Mark T. Smith is a member of Joint Task Force-Burnt Frost, formed in February 2008 to intercept a non-functioning reconnaissance satellite that was in its final orbits prior to entering the earth's atmosphere.
Smith, a battalion chief, is assigned to the 30th Space Wing, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Lompoc, Calif. He has 22 years of military service. He is a 1985 graduate of Lakota High School and received an associate degree in 2006 from Allen Hancock College.
Smith is the son of Jean and Tom Smith of Liberty Twp.

Michael Lang
Army Pvt. Michael S. Lang has graduated from Basic Combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.
In 2005, the private graduated from Perkins High School in Sandusky. Lang is the son of Julie Winters of West Chester Twp. and Jeffrey Lang of Norwalk, Ohio.
Private Brian Hoops
Army Pvt. Brian Hoops has graduated from Basic Combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. Hoops is a 2007 graduate of Lakota East High School and the son of Phillip Hoops of Liberty Twp.
Local soldier part of humanitarian mission
Soldiers from Company C, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team and 3rd Infantry Division teamed up with the Civil Affairs Detachment on FOB Iskan to coordinate a humanitarian aid mission. The forces distributed clothing and shoes to Iraqi children in a small village.
The mission was performed in conjunction with local government approval and coordination
"The village was selected because of the extreme poverty that characterizes the area and lack of support it has received in the past," said 1st Lt. Greg Hope, 4th Platoon leader, Co. C. Hope is from West Chester Twp.
