Grower/producers: Move good for farmer's market

New location at The Square @ Union Centre a hit with many

Finding local fresh vegetables and other farm-produced products will be easier or area residents.

The second weekend for the West Chester Farmers Market takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at its new location at The Square @ Union Centre, the urban park that opened June 26 at Centre Pointe and Floer drives.

Judging from last week's opening, patrons and merchants believe the farmers market will be successful in its new location.

"It's beautiful; this is good," said Bill Miller, a woodworker who displays his intarsia woodcuts at the market.

Miller said he has known farmers market coordinators Jim and Linda Rosselot for years, and he displayed his work when the market was held at The Feed Barn, formerly at Cincinnati-Dayton Road and Union Centre Boulevard.

Sarah Daunt works with the Rosselots at the booth for Gravel Knolls Farm, the couple's family farm. She said she has had a lot of repeat visitors each week, sampling meals she creates with produce from the farm.

"This is wonderful," she said during the June 28 opening. "It's like a little city of tents."

For seamstress Amy Keppler, the location along Centre Pointe Drive has dual benefits. Along with providing a place to sell her aprons, kitchen appliance covers and other textile goods, the high-profile spot provides excellent advertising for the online aspect of her business, Everything's Covered.

"This is my way of saying, 'check out my Web site,' " she said as she spun wool on a foot-powered spinning wheel and chatted with shoppers.

Don Tarlton of The Culinary Farm said this year's market, which runs Saturdays through October, has already been strong.

"Not only do we have our regulars, but also a lot of newer people," he said.
