Driver strikes mailboxes, hydrant, falls asleep
An intoxicated driver was found snoring in his vehicle after crashing into several mailboxes, a crosswalk sign and a fire hydrant.
Angel Andreas Fernandez, 25, of 6550 Brookville Road, was reportedly passed out behind the wheel of his silver Honda Civic at 2:11 a.m. on June 28. Police said the car was parked in front of Talawanda High School, resting against a fire hydrant and on top of a crosswalk sign.
Officers attempted to wake Fernandez, noting the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. After several failed attempts to rouse him from his slumber, officers answered his ringing cell phone and spoke with his girlfriend. The girlfriend reportedly told police she would contact Fernandez's mother and would meet police at the hospital.
Subsequent investigation showed several mailboxes in the 200-block of West Chestnut Street were also damaged, with police speculating Fernandez crossed the center lane and wiped them out as he drove down the street.
Oxford Life Squad was also unsuccessful in its attempts to wake Fernandez, transporting him to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital for medical attention. Hospital staff obtained a blood sample from Fernandez to check his BAC, on which police are still awaiting results.
Fernandez was charged with failure to control and OVI after his release from the hospital.
Film issues, milkshake allegedly fuel fight
A malfunctioning film may have contributed to a fight among several juveniles on June 23.
Police were dispatched to reports of a fight near the intersection of Main and High streets at 9:30 p.m., advised that a 14-year-old male had assaulted a 12-year-old. Two suspects located near 25 W. High St. spoke with officers, who later made contact with the victim at United Dairy Farmers.
The victim reportedly told police he had met the two suspects while at Oxford's skate park, then attended a movie with them. He claimed they began to call him names and make fun of him for no reason, saying he was punched in the head after a heated exchange of words.
The alleged assailants said they had been told the movie would not be shown due to a problem, which caused the victim to become angry and dump his milkshake on one of them. The 14-year-old said at that point he struck the victim in the head.
Student injured in Uptown fight suffers bleeding over eye
A 22-year-old Miami University student was reportedly injured during a fight outside of Brick Street Bar on June 28.
Officers heard of a fight at the bar and observed several males standing near an alleyway on North Poplar Street, who did not exhibit any visible injuries. Shortly thereafter, police were informed that a male subject was in front of the Oxford Police Department, bleeding profusely from above his right eye.
The Nichols Road resident told officers he had been with friends near the patio outside of Brick Street Bar when a fight broke out. During the course of the brawl, he said, a black male with dreadlocks struck him above the right eye.
Oxford Life Squad transported the victim to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries, with police noting an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Trenton woman arrested during second incident
A disorderly, intoxicated woman was arrested June 24 when police found she was only 20 years old.
Kari Holdren, 203 Blue Quail Place, Trenton, was charged with underage intoxication following her second run-in with Oxford Police in one night. Officers said they had first dealt with Holdren during a traffic stop of her boyfriend, noting she was very belligerent and had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath.
When police found she was half of a disorderly couple at McDonald's later on, they ran her license and learned that she was only 20. Holdren was issued a citation for underage intoxication outside of the restaurant and released on her own recognizance from the scene.
Safe robbers may have entered through vent
Oxford Police said several subjects broke into KDS Express on June 26, stealing a safe containing an unspecified amount of money.
The owner's wife came in to work at 5:30 a.m., noticing the building had been broken into and found the safe missing. One of the suspects allegedly entered through a vent at the rear of the building, unlocking the rear door of the building from the inside. The vent was found pried off the wall, with police speculating it was likely how entry was made.
Detectives are presently working on a couple of suspects, but were unable to reveal exactly how much money had been in the safe when it was stolen.
