Mason schools: Former teacher was reported to police, no criminal conduct found
Friday, June 27, 2008
Mason City Schools officials say they have proof they contacted police regarding allegations against a former high school music teacher accused of an inappropriate relationship with an 18-year-old student.
School Board President Connie Yingling, during the June 26 regular school board meeting, read a letter from Mason Police Department Lt. Col. Steve Schuchart. It stated that police spoke with the girl's mother, who refused to make a police report against former teacher Adam Brown.
The letter read, "(School Resource) Officer (Troy) Nelson independently interviewed the alleged victim's mother and she insisted there was no criminal conduct, no sexual conduct and no reason to initiate an official police investigation."
Mason Citizens for Accountability and Results in Education has claimed the district sat idly by when notified of the relationship.
In the letter, Schuchart said Principal Dave Allen and Assistant Superintendent Craig Ullery informed police of the allegations against Brown on April 9.
Many public records requests have been made for reports on Brown, but no reports existed because the mother did not report him to police, Schuchart said.
Brown resigned in April, shortly after a school investigation into the relationship.
