1 hospitalized as truck plows into home

HAMILTON — One woman was injured when a pick up truck with a sticky accelerator plowed into her residence Tuesday afternoon, according to Hamilton police.

The usually quiet neighborhood on Bedford Avenue in Lindenwald was disturbed at around 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, when a Hamilton man driving a pick up truck sped into a curve, went off the road and struck a home.

The driver, 50-year-old Odell Whittmore of the 4000 block of Pembroke Drive, told officers that the accelerator on the truck malfunctioned and that he was unable to control the vehicle, said Officer Bob Snyder of Hamilton Police Department.

Neighbors said the truck sounded like the gas pedal was floored, making the engine rev loudly. Whittmore was cited for driving an unsafe vehicle, Snyder said.

A family of four children and two adults were all home at the time of the crash.

The mother, 27-year-old Jamie Evans, was taken by ambulance to The Fort Hamilton Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

Evans was expected to be released from the hospital after being treated for a fractured knee and bruising on the right side of her body, said her live-in boyfriend, 33-year-old Mark Goodman. He said the children were playing outside and Evans was walking by the window when the truck came crashing into the wall.

Goodman said she was thrown 10 feet away from the impact.

"I'm just relieved that she's OK," Goodman said. "But as it is now, our house is basically condemned."

The impact from the truck damaged the foundation and heavily damaged a load-bearing wall, Goodman said. The family will not be able to return to their home for at least a week or more, he said, adding that they will be staying in a hotel overnight, with help from the American Red Cross.
