Police arrested James Mercer, 9 W. Chestnut St., for OVI after he failed a field sobriety test on May 24. Initial reports said a car had overturned on North Poplar Street, but officers eventually discovered the crash site in the zero block of West Vine.
Miami University Police were already attending to the crash, having seen Mercer crawl out of the vehicle and attempt to run away from the accident site. Miami Police were able to stop Mercer from fleeing, detaining him until Oxford Police could administer a horizontal gaze nystagmus test.
Upon failure of the test, Mercer was arrested for OVI and taken to the Oxford Police Station.
Intoxicated female taken in after series of accidents
A 19-year-old Oxford resident was arrested May 28 following a string of car crashes on Main Street.
Kristy Warren, 3793 Stillwell Beckett Road, was charged with OVI, underage intoxication, failure to control a vehicle and failure to stop after an accident
Police initially received reports that a vehicle had struck two vehicles on South Main Street around 10:30 p.m. Shortly thereafter, they allegedly received a second call from a subject who said Warren was intoxicated and driving around Oxford.
The caller reportedly told officers Warren had just called her and told her she had struck a few cars. Police were able to locate Warren near the intersection of Chestnut Street and Kehr Road, driving a heavily-damaged vehicle.
Officers stopped and arrested Warren, alledgedly finding her Blood Alcohol Content to be .175.
Police still seeking absent assailant in alleged bar attack
A 23-year-old Chicago man alleges he was punched multiple times by a stranger while at an Oxford bar on May 30.
The victim told police a black male with a shaved head was trying to start a fight with a friend of his, accusing the friend of buying a different person's girlfriend a drink. As the victim attempted to resolve the conflict with the subject, the assailant reportedly told him "his friend's problems were now his" and began punching him.
Police said the victim had a cut and swelling on his right brow, the result of between six and eight punches from the assailant.
Shortly after their initial contact, police said the subject advised officers that he had learned the name of the suspect from a friend. Officers attempted to speak with the suspect at his residence, but said he was not present at the time.
Police said they positively linked a file photo of the identified subject with the victim's description using their LEADS system.
Methamphetamine tank found near mobile home park
Oxford Police discovered a tank they suspect had been used for the manufacturing of methamphetamine near a mobile home park on College Corner Pike.
Officers found a compressed air tank in a wooded area near railroad tracks at 5201 College Corner Pike on May 22, which they said had been converted to store anhydrous ammonia. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency called in a clean-up crew to dispose of the items, due to the hazardous nature of the materials. Police reported all materials were removed from the scene, with no clear suspects at this time.
Student wounded; officers unable to locate suspect
A tuxedo-clad blond man allegedly assaulted a 22-year-old Miami University student near Skyline Chili on May 25.
Police were flagged down by a man stating his friend had just been assaulted near the restaurant, with the assailant walking near the Elms hotel. Upon arrival at the Elms, a large group of people pointed officers toward a male dressed all in blue walking into the hotel.
After stopping the man in blue and bringing him back outside, several witnesses said it had actually been a blond-haired male in a tuxedo who assaulted the student.
Police spoke with the witnesses, who said they had been walking near Skyline when members of a wedding party started a confrontation with them about a prior incident. The witnesses said the blond-haired man proceeded to punch the 22-year-old and run away to the hotel.
Officers eventually located the assailant at the hotel, who claimed a confrontation had occurred but he denied punching anyone. Police inspected the man's hands, but said there were no marks on them to indicate he had punched anyone.
The student was unable to positively identify his assailant and was eventually taken to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital for treatment.
