Five area students have been awarded college scholarships from AK Steel Corp.

The scholarships were awarded through the AK Steel Foundation, which gives the funds to the sons and daughters of company employees. Each student will receive $5,000 for their first year of school. The scholarships are renewable up to $20,000, said company spokesman Alan McCoy.

"Earning an AK Steel scholarship speaks volumes about the students and families associated with our company," said James Wainscott, AK president, chairman and CEO, in a release.

"We congratulate all of our recipients for their achievements and applaud them for demonstrating the values that help make AK Steel a successful company."

Local recipients include Christopher Arozarena, Lakota West High School; Kevin Enchelmeyer, Monroe High School; Lauren Gabbard, Middletown High School; Eli Johnson, Middletown High School; and Tyler Simpson, Monroe High School.

St. Xavier High School student Mark Schutte, a resident of Mason, was selected for a scholarship as well but has already received a full scholarship from another university.

As a result, he is recognized for being chosen, but cannot receive the funds due to AK Steel's eligibility requirements, company officials said.

The AK Steel Foundation grew from a similar scholarship program sponsored by Armco Steel Corp. The company has been disbursing scholarships to children of employees for decades, McCoy said.
