LEBANON — David Ghysels, a former star athlete at Springboro High School who plans to transfer to the University of Dayton, remained in the Warren County Jail on Monday, charged with raping a 16-year-old girl, according to court records.
Bond is set at $750,000 for Ghysels, 20, of Springboro, pending his arraignment Tuesday, May 13, in Warren County Court.
Ghysels is accused of using "force or threat of force" during a sexual assault on the girl about 10 p.m., May 7, at North Park in Springboro, according to police reports and court records.
Police were alerted after the victim was treated at an area hospital, police said Monday.
Ghysels was served with an arrest warrant Friday and booked into the jail in Lebanon.
The charge is a first-degree felony. If convicted Ghysels faces three to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
Ghysels' lawyer, Christopher Cornyn, declined comment.
In 2006, Ghysels was honored as the Division I first-team catcher for the second straight year on the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Ohio team.
Ghysels, who also played football for Springboro High School, attended Bemidji State University in Minnesota to play football. He has been admitted to UD but is not currently enrolled.
"There will be no spot on the football until the matter is resolved," said UD spokeswoman Teri Rizvi.
