More than 90 percent of residents in the city own their own homes; 93 percent of the residents agree that fire and emergency services are satisfactory in the community; and 20 percent of residents work in the Cincinnati area.

These are just a few of the findings gleaned from a communitywide telephone survey that also found the Middletown Journal and the Monroe Pulse-Journal were reported as the top sources of information in the community.

About 300 adults ages 18 and older — from the city's list of water customers — participated in the survey conducted between mid-March and early April by Stanford H. Odesky & Associates of Toledo. The survey was designed to help city officials gauge public attitudes and opinions regarding current city needs, pressing issues affecting the city and future growth scenarios.

Kevin Chesar, Monroe director of development, said the survey is a tool to help guide the city and committee in formulating future growth strategies and development initiatives for the next 25 years.

"That's the whole point of this to provide the best balance we can by correctly addressing our growth by having good design guidelines, making sure (development is) located in the appropriate places and at the same time recognizing that people do like that small-town feeling," he said.

The survey is just one component of the city's efforts to update its Comprehensive Plan. The city's plan last underwent a major overhaul in 1997, and since then there have been some minor updates, most recently in 2004, city officials said.

The city has hired Poggemeyer Design Group Inc. of Bowling Green to update the plan.
