A 20-year-old Miami University student was hospitalized in critical condition after falling from a lofted bed at the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity house Sunday, April 28.

Sophomore Aaron Miller reportedly fell out of his bed at the 111 East Spring St. residence and sustained a serious head injury. Oxford police arrived on scene to find Miller on the floor of his bedroom, having trouble breathing.

Miller was initially taken to McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital by Oxford Life Squad, but was eventually transferred to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton for further care. He was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

Mark E. Timmes, the Pi Kappa Phi's chief executive officer, said all activities at the fraternity house had been suspended in the wake of the incident.

"Right now, it's basically serving as a boarding house," Timmes said. "Exams are upon them anyway, but this gives everyone a time out while we sort this situation out."

Timmes was not sure how long an investigation into Sunday's incident would take, but said the fraternity is working with local authorities to answer any lingering questions.

Miami University spokeswoman Claire Wagner confirmed that the fraternity has suspended activities, noting that it is standard procedure under the given circumstances.

She said Miami's dean of students already had spoken with Miller's family, who did not wish to make any comments at this time.

"We're doing our best to support the injured student's family and friends during this difficult time," Timmes said.
