The National Labor Relations Board on Friday certified the results of last week’s two-day election in which the Armco Employees Independent Federation voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.

The AEIF union, locked out of AK Steel Corp.’s Middletown Works since March 1, now is the Armco Employees Independent Federation/International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 1943 following the representation election in which 1,056 members cast votes in favor of the Machinists over the United Steelworkers, AEIF or no union representation.

Certification letters were sent out Friday, and no objections were submitted by the Thursday deadline, said Laura Adkins, the executive secretary of the NLRB’s Cincinnati office.

There were no discussions this week between the union as to when contract talks would resume, though both company and union officials have said negotiations will resume again.

“As soon as we get the certification letter, we’ll contact the Machinists,” said Alan McCoy, AK Steel’s vice president of government and public relations.

Said Brian Daley, president of AEIF/IAM Local 1943: “We have been and are ready to go.”

Friday, McCoy said the steelmaker had earlier received a request by a Machinists representative to begin negotiations this week. However, the election was not yet certified so the company did not recognize the request for a bargaining session.

The AEIF, founded in 1943, has ended its 63-year history as the world’s largest independent steelworkers union in a vote by more than 1,800 of the AEIF’s 2,200 members.
