Local chocolatier aims to make special occasions sweet

Liberty Twp. woman turns once-a-year treats into year-round business

"Home Sweet Home" is not just a motto for Melinda Mueller, it's the heart of her business.

For 20 years, the Liberty Twp. resident created sweets as a once-a-year treat for family and friends. Now she has expanding her clientele and her repertoire with Ruby's Sweet Spot, a home-based business offering everything from dipped pretzels and turtles to buckeyes, Belgian chocolates and other decadent desserts.

Mueller wraps her cacao-based creations in special bags that provide moisture, oxygen and aroma protection to guarantee freshness. She then places them in gourmet gift boxes wrapped in a double-faced satin bow and ships them in biodegradable cold packs to ensure they arrive fresh.

"It not only looks really pretty, almost too good to eat, but it tastes just as good," she said.

Ruby's Sweet Spot also specializes in creating themes for events. Customized orders are available.

Mueller named the business after her grandmother, Ruby Taylor, who grew up poor and, along with Mueller's grandfather, built Golden Years Nursing Home.

She said she enjoys being able to use her creativity to satisfy the most discerning sweet tooth, including her own. A former interior designer and personal trainer, Mueller believes in eating well but said she "cheats" on Sundays by sampling some of her work.

Leslie Anzalone of Liberty Twp. ordered combination baskets for her husband, father and father-in-law last month for Father's Day and was so satisfied that she ordered more items for a party shortly thereafter.

"They came out great," Anzalone said. "There was a large quantity of stuff and a really good assortment. They loved it, to say the least."
