'Dead-inspired teens take their music to the public
Friday, August 22, 2008
HAMILTON — Although the quartet that makes up the band Vedge are still students at Wyoming High School, they're already booked up nearly every weekend — and making the band's Music Cafe debut next week at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts.
The band's first few gigs were as an electric band, but quickly made the transition to an acoustic format, inspired by bluegrass-inspired jam units such as the Yonder Mountain String Band.
"We were playing and listening to a lot of Grateful Dead," said guitarist Michael Hoffman. "Then we started listening to the music that influenced them. We ended up playing straight-up bluegrass and thought that we would only attract hillbillies and old people, but we have co-headlined at heavy metal festivals and no one got up to leave."
Right now, given the young age of its members, the band is simply passing the time, having fun gigging on the weekends, but Hoffman said that he, for one, "would love to play music forever," and plans to major in music education when he goes off to college.
The band also includes Dugan Warmoth (who named the band) on guitar, Robby Buchsbaum on mandolin and Will Putnam on bass. Vedge has a five-song EP, "Massachusetts," that will be available at the Music Cafe.
Also performing at the Music Cafe on Tuesday, Aug. 26, will be alt-country singer/songwriter Kevin Ross; Jim Johnson playing country, waltzes and polkas; cover rock by Phoenix and folk/rock from Roy Bushman.
