Review: Just when you thought you couldn't take any more of Hollywood's self-absorbed navel-gazing, along
comes Albert Brooks' perversely amusing "The Muse."
The writer-director-star plays Steven Phillips, a longtime screenwriter who, as everyone keeps telling
him, has suddenly "lost his edge." Over lunch, a baby-suit at Paramount informs him that his
three-picture deal is kaput and he's got to get off the lot by 5 because "Brian De Palma needs your
office."
Luckily, Steven's old friend and fellow scribe, Jack (Jeff Bridges exuding Hollywood insider
self-confidence), has a tip. It's a little, um, unusual, but it worked for Jack. He introduces Steven to
Sarah (Sharon Stone), a genuine honest-to-the-gods Muse. As in, one of the nine daughters of Zeus.
