Another year, another round of graduates, yet the class of 2009 at Talawanda High School proves to stand out among the rest.
THS valedictorian Shelby Bachman and salutatorian Dmitriy Brezhnev not only represent leadership, academic success and perseverance, but they also have a solid future ahead of them.
Shelby Bachman may only be 18 years old, but her accomplishments and achievements surpass an average teenager.
As if being the President of National Honor Society, running cross country and being a member of jazz band weren’t enough, this senior earned 36 hours of post-secondary credit. This not only puts her ahead with college credit, but it also means she has already mastered the art of studying.
Although Bachman is very busy, she says school means a lot to her and she will take many memories from Talawanda High School.
“It’s a great feeling to be a part of my class, and I can’t wait to graduate,” Bachman said.
Through Bachman’s outstanding credentials, she received a full scholarship to the University of Southern California to study neuroscience. In addition to her future academic plans, she also hopes to continue her involvement in jazz band and dedicate time to community outreach programs.
Bachman said she is honored to be named the valedictorian and thanks her parents for their continued support.
“It’s a great reward for all the dedication I put in over the years,” she said. “I would thank my parents for everything they have done, anytime I needed an extra hand, they were there.”
Dmitriy Brezhnev has had a successful year and will be able to add Talawanda High School’s salutatorian to his long list of accomplishments. This 17-year-old was a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search and won an award to further his education. On top of his research, he also plays tennis, is a member of Mock Trial, Model UN, Robotics and also earned post-secondary credit.
Brezhnev not only learned a lot while taking post-secondary classes, but also said this experience will help him in the future.
“(My) post-secondary experience gave me a different aspect of high school and presented me with a vision of what I will be doing in the next four years and what the curriculum will look like,” Brezhnev said.
The combination of hard work and determination led Brezhnev to Stanford University, where he plans to study mathematics with an application in another science.
Brezhnev said he is excited about graduating and plans to tell his fellow classmates how important it is to use the past to make a future.
THS Principal Vicki Brunn commented on how talented these two individuals are and how she expects them to do great things.
“They are gifted students — talented in arts, academically and have all around wonderful, caring personalities,” Brunn said.
THS English instructor Clare Squance realized firsthand how talented and ambitious these two students are.
“It is a joy for me to get to work with such excellent students who can also have fun in the process of learning,” she said.
Both Bachman and Brezhnev will speak to their fellow classmates at their graduation ceremony tonight, June 5.
