KETTERING — What in the world is one of Jimmy Buffett's Choral Reefers doing riffing at a Kettering church?

Well, just so happens Buffett's lead guitarist, Peter Mayer, is the son of two Lutheran missionaries. And while Mayer may spend part of his time in hedonistic Margaritaville, he has a spiritual side, too.

"Mayer writes and performs Christian music," said Dan Bennett, director of youth and family ministries at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. "He's been very active in the Lutheran church. Apparently when he's on the road he likes to hook up with a church in the area."

Mayer will be double-dipping in Dayton this weekend. Today, May 10, his band featuring brother Jim Mayer on bass will wow the bar crowd at Canal Street Tavern, 308 E. First St. At 7 p.m. Sunday, May 11, the group will trade hard rock for something more ethereal in a performance at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Bennett said the Good Shepherd concert was originally planned for young people. But because of Mayer's connection to the Buffett band, older Parrotheads are coming out of the coop.

"One lady who is retired bought 10 tickets," Bennett said. "I thought the youth would be interested in the Peter Mayer Band, but it's turning out that a lot of middle-aged people and baby boomers are coming. The fact that this falls on Mother's Day is a coincidence, still, a lot of people are bringing their moms."
