International Paper to close Mason plant; 101 jobs to be lost
Friday, October 03, 2008
International Paper today, Oct. 3, announced it will permanently close the Mason corrugated container plant on U.S. 42 in early December, resulting in the loss of 101 jobs.
"This was a difficult decision for our business, and we regret the impact it will have on the employees of the Mason plant. These are good, hard-working people, and we owe them our thanks for their commitment and the quality of their work," said Dale Sommer, regional general manager. "However, this plant was at a disadvantage because of its relatively small size and limitations on expansion possibilities. We made the decision to close it only after careful analysis of how to best serve our customers in the region."
The company will discuss plans for severance and outplacement assistance with the local union.
The plant began operations in 1958. It produces corrugated packaging for the food and beverage industry.
