MASON — More than 12,000 people will walk or run and 500 volunteers will help them to raise money to find a cure for breast cancer on Sunday, Sept. 14 in Mason.
The Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure is scheduled from 7 to 10 a.m. at Mason Intermediate School, 6307 Mason-Montogomery Road.
The event is hosted throughout the year in communities across the country to raise money to fight breast cancer on every level. More than $1 billion has been raised by the Koman Foundation that has gone toward research, education and health services.
"It's an opportunity to help raise funds and to give back," said Jan Middleton of Landen, who will be "celebrating" the one-year anniversary of when she was being diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer.
"As a woman who was diagnosed with this at an early age — I'm 39 — I want to make sure the word gets out about this disease to people of all ages," she said. "I want to help raise funds. We want this to end."
Middleton is co-captain of her team of 50, which includes family, friends, co-workers and neighbors.
"When I decided to do this, I figured there would only be a few people who would join us. I was shocked," she said.
Her team is one of 339 scheduled to participate in the Race for the Cure. The fund-raising goal for this year's event is $750,000 and more than $418,600 has been raised.
The Race for the Cure is actually three separate events. A competitive 5K run is scheduled to start at 8:45 a.m., with another 5K run/walk set to begin at 9 a.m. There will be a family 2K walk at 9:30 a.m.
