MIDDLETOWN — Billy J. Hatfield, a correctional officer at Lebanon Correctional Institution, was arrested on four counts of abusing steroids Wednesday, June 11, in Middletown.

Middletown police found seven vials of anabolic steroid and 16 packs of anabolic steroid tablets Jan. 25 while conducting a welfare check on Hatfield's spouse at the couple's apartment in the 100 block of Bavarian Street in Middletown, according to the police report.

Hatfield, 33, was arrested at the time on two outstanding warrants for failing to appear on traffic citations in Montgomery County, according to the police report.

Police had to wait for lab results on the confiscated drugs before making the steroid charges because state law requires an exact chemical match, said Middletown police Sgt. David Birk.

Middletown police listed the prison as Hatfield's place of employment on the arrest sheet. Ellen Myers, the warden's assistant at Lebanon Correctional said there is a correctional officer named Billy Hatfield employed at the prison, but added she was unable to confirm that it was the same man.

"This is the first we've heard about it," Myers said. "To the best of my knowledge he is still employed here."

The prison requires any employee who gets arrested to tell their immediate supervisor, Myers said.

The warden would then make a determination about any disciplinary action or safety precautions needed based on the individual circumstances of the arrest, Myers said.

Hatfield is being held at the Middletown City Jail on 10 percent of a $13,500 bond. His arraignment is for 9 a.m. June 13.
