OXFORD — A 19-year-old Miami University student was released from Miami Valley Hospital on Wednesday, May 14, five days after a fight at the Signa Nu fraternity under investigation by Oxford police and the university.

Steven A. Ward, of Springboro, was charged with underage intoxication after Oxford police were called to the fraternity house at 300 Talawanda Road at 2:28 a.m. May 9, according to a police report.

Witnesses said Ward had been drinking prior to falling and striking his head on the stairs, according to the report.

Ward was taken from McCullough Hyde Hospital in Oxford to the Dayton hospital for treatment of a head injury. He was released Wednesday, a hospital spokesman said.

Further investigation indicated Ward was actually injured in a fight with a fraternity brother, said Sgt. Jim Squance, public information officer for the Oxford police.

On Wednesday, Squance declined to identify the fraternity brother because he is an uncharged suspect. Squance said no one else had been charged in the case.

University officials said the incident was under investigation by the director of student affairs, but that no action had been taken.
