IBEW Local 648 wins settlement for electricians

HAMILTON — Two contractors will have to pay for unpaid prevailing wages to electricians who did work at Miami University, according to a local electrical workers union.

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 648, of Hamilton, recently settled a lawsuit that it filed in October 2007 against Sigma Capital, Inc. of Roselawn and AC Electrical Systems, Inc. of Harrison. Union officials said the two contractors violated Ohio's prevailing wage law on two construction projects at Miami.

Extras

The settlement requires that the two contractors pay several workers back pay and penalties, amounting to nearly $50,000. Additionally, Sigma Capital cannot bid or work on an Ohio public improvement project for two years.

Union official Jeff McGuffey said IBEW Local 648 is monitoring other construction projects — including Vandercar's Corridor 75 Industrial Park Project in Monroe — and the upcoming renovation of the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
