The Oxford Summer Music Festival Series will take place from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Thursday evenings, June 18 through Aug. 27. The concerts will be held in the John W. Altman Performance Pavilion in the Uptown Parks. The concerts are free.

Diana Durr, director of the Oxford Visitors & Convention Bureau, said the series is beginning later this year due to the number of sponsors who committed to the event.

“Many people believe the city provides money to put on the concerts, but it is all the generosity of the sponsors,” Durr said.

This summer marks the 23rd year of the concert series. The bureau strives to provide a variety of music, and will kick this season off with a performance by the Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra.

Scheduling bands to perform is a long process. Requirements for being selected include providing a sample of music for five volunteer judges, who begin sifting through hundreds of music samples in January. Once the bands are selected, dates are scheduled, back-up plans are made and sound is constructed. Sponsors are in place early, usually by the previous September.

Oxford averages around 2,000 concertgoers for most nights and 3,000 to 4,000 on the night of the Oxford Police hog roast.
