OXFORD — The Oxford Summer Music Festival wraps up its 25th season with one more show that will be accompanied by the Oxford police’s annual pig roast. The events will start at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Uptown Parks and the featured band is Thunder Bay, a classic rock group.
“Attendance has been wonderful,” said Diana Durr, the director of the Oxford Visitors and Convention Bureau. “We get people from Hamilton, Fairfield, Camden and Brookville. They come from all over.”
Typically, the Oxford Music Festival draws about 2,000 people, Durr said. When combined with the pig roast, that number nearly doubles.
“We have something like 3,000 to 3,500 people coming to this event. It’s gotten very popular by word of mouth,” said Sgt. Jim Squance of the Oxford Police Department.
The pig roast began in 1998, and the event kept growing over the years, largely because it marks both the end of summer and the beginning of the school year, when Miami University students return to Oxford.
“It’s the perfect opportunity to end the summer series with the pig roast and welcome the Miami University community back to town,” Squance said.
That community is quite diverse, which is part of what Squance most enjoys about the event.
“I like the community atmosphere. It’s one big community picnic. We’ve had cheerleaders, fraternities, sororities and hockey players,” he said. “Hopefully we can parlay this into a safe school year.”
