MIDDLETOWN — A local theater group is using the holiday spirit in its goal to bring people together from all walks of life.
he Middletown Lyric Theatre is hosting the holiday concert “Wonderment: A Time of Awe,” by the Cincinnati Men’s Chorus at 8 p.m. Dec. 10. The performance is part of the theater’s UNITY Project, which showcases shows of cultural, racial and ethnic importance in an effort to educate audiences about a socially conscious world.
It is the first time the theater has invited the Cincinnati choral group — a non-profit community chorus established in 1991 consisting of gay and gay-supportive men — to Middletown for a performance, said Charlie Shafer, main artistic director for the Middletown Lyric Theatre.
“It’s an opportunity to reach out to a broader community,” Shafer said of the performance.
Originally slated as a preview of the CMC’s holiday concert, the group will perform the concert in its entirety, with a mix of traditional and contemporary holiday selections, Shafer said. The chorus will be performing the same concert at Cincinnati’s School for The Creative and Performing Arts Dec. 17-18.
“They’ve decided to do the entire concert for us,” Shafer said. “It will be traditional, with all the good ones, but there’s some pretty fun stuff as well.”
Among some of those fun tunes the show will offer are renditions of “Welcome Christmas” from Dr. Seuss’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” an African version of “Hallelujah,” Shafer said.
Refreshments will be available during the one-night only performance.
