Basic
Description
- This is a simulation of typical video poker machines
found in major casinos. A player starts with an initial bank of
chips (points, coins, widgets, etc.). The player may bet 1,2,3,4
or 5 chips. The player selects the betting amount before the cards are
dealt. The bet amounts are in a a radio selection box.
- Once the bet amount is selected, the player clicks the
DEAL button. The player is dealt 5 cards. (The game automatically
deals the first hand when you start from Welcome page.) Below each
card is a checkbox and the word "HOLD". The player may
hold any or all of the 5 cards, by clicking the mouse in the checkbox
below the desired cards.
To the right of the checkboxes, the poker hand is evaluated and the bet amount and
bank are shown.
- Once cards have been selected, the player clicks the
DRAW button. The draw button will deal the next few cards in the
deck and replace the cards that are NOT selected for hold. To the right of the cards
will be the final evaluation of the hand and the current bank amount.
- At this point the player may change the bet amount, deal
a new hand or cash out. The CASH OUT button ends the game. CASH OUT
allows a player to enter their name (if they have a high score) and return
to the game with their current bank amount.
Examples
and notes:
1. The order the cards appear does not matter. The order
shown below is for simplicity.
2. The payout amounts for each type of hand are available
at the bottom of this page.
3. Aces can count as less than "2" or more than
"King". The most favorable is always used.
- Pair - A pair means that exactly two of the five cards
have the same rank (value). A pair can be 'low' or 'high'. A 'high' pair
has Jacks, Queens, Kings or Aces. A low pair is not worth any points.
This is a 'low' pair.
This is a 'high' pair.
- Two pair- As one might expect, this hand contains two
groups of paired cards. For two pair, the high/low doesn't matter.
This is two pair.
- Three of a Kind - Three of the five cards in the hand
have the same rank.
This is three of a kind.
- Straight - A straight occurs if all five cards can be
placed in order, with no gaps. A.2.3.4.5
and 10.J.Q.K.A are examples of the
Ace used as a high or low card.
This is a straight.
- Flush - In a flush hand, all 5 cards are the same
suit (clubs, diamonds, hearts, or spades).

- Full house - A full house is a combination of
three-of-a-kind and a pair.
This is a full house.
- Four of a Kind - This hand contains all four of the cards
of a given rank.
Four of a kind.
- Straight Flush - This hand is a straight hand in which
all 5 cards are also the same suit.
Straight Flush
- Royal Flush -
This is a straight flush that has
the cards 10.J.Q.K.A. It is the highest possible hand. (Out of the 2.5
million possible hands, there are only 4 Royal Flushes.)
A Royal Flush!!
Tips and
Strategy:
- If dealt a low pair, hold it. About 1 out of 6 times,
it will turn into two-pair. Also, 1 out of 9 times, it will become three-of-a-kind.
- Check the suits of the cards. If you have four cards
of a suit, it may be wise to hold onto them. Holding these will
result in a flush 1 out of every 5.2 times (not 1 in 4).
- If you have NOTHING, but one high card, keep the high
card. You may get a high pair.
