  • The first seeing-eye dog was presented to a blind person on April 25, 1938.
  • Every year, $1.5 billion is spent on pet food. This is four times the amount spent on baby food.
  • Dalmations are born white, without spots.
  • A dog's heart beats between 70 and 120 times a minute, compared with a human heart which beats 70 to 80 times a minute.
  • A dog can hear sounds 250 yards away that most people cannot hear beyond 25 yards. The human ear can detect sound waves vibrating at frequencies up to 20,000 times a second. But dogs can hear sound waves that vibrate at frequencies of more than 30,000 times a second.
  • It has been established that people who own pets live longer, have less stress, and have fewer heart attacks.
  • A dog's normal temperature is between 100.2-102.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • A dog's whiskers are touch-sensitive hairs called vibrissae. They are found on the muzzle, above the eyes and below the jaws, and can actually sense tiny changes in airflow.
  • Dogs may not have as many taste buds as we do (they have about 1,700 on their tongues, while we humans have about 9,000), but that doesn't mean they're not discriminating eaters.   • The Labrador Retriever is the number one registered breed of 2005 according to the AKC with 137,867 registrations. Rounding out the top 10 in order are Golden Retrievers, Yorkshire Terriers, German Shepherds, Beagles, Dachshunds, Boxers, Poodles, Shih Tzu and Miniature Schnauzers. The Labrador Retriever is also the #1 registered dog in England according to the Kennel Club of England.
