Short-handed Wright State drops third straight, 69-53 against Detroit
Final: UDM wins 69-53. The Titans shot well, pressured the Raiders and got 16 points from guard Chase Simon. Cole Darling led WSU with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
The Raiders, playing with injured guards Julius Mays and Vance Hall and forward Tavares Sledge (out by coach’s decision) lost their third straight to drop to 9-12 and 4-5 in the Horizon League. They trailed 38-25 at halftime. Detroit improved to 10-11, 4-5 in the league.
3:23 second: UDM leads 67-42. This is the Titans’ biggest lead. Wright State coach Billy Donlon was called for a technical foul with 4:34 left after extended clapping toward one of the referees on a call against Detroit, which came after several consecutive foul calls against Wright State. Evan Bruinsma has scored eight of Detroit’s past nine points as the Titans are shooting 51 percent. Wright State, led by 8 points from John Balwigaire, is shooting 38.6 percent.
7:00 second: UDM leads 57-40. The Titans have led by as many as 19 points at 57-38 despite lowering its shooting percentage this half by keeping up the pressure. The Titans have 10 steals, tying a season high by a WSU opponent, and Wright State has 15 turnovers. Four different WSU players have 7 points as the Raiders are shooting 42.5 percent, and Chase Simon leads Detroit with 16 points on 6-13, 4-8 from 3-point range.
11:29 second: UDM leads 50-36. The Titans went up by a game-high 16 points on a Chase Simon 3-pointer with 12:42 left, giving him a game-high 13 points. Wright State then got a Reggie Arceneaux pull-up jumper in transition to set the current margin. Detroit is continuing to shoot well (54.1 percent) while pressuring Wright State, which is missing one of its two best ball-handlers in Julius Mays.
15:12 second: UDM leads 45-34. The Raiders have hit two 3-pointers this half to boost their long-range shooting to 5-10 in the game. But Detroit continues to shoot well (56.3 percent in the game) and now has 3 players in double figures: Ray McCallum and Jason Calliste with 11 each and Chase Simon with 10. John Balwigaire and Johann Mpondo each have 7 points for Wright State.
Halftime: UDM leads 38-25. The Raiders scored on a Cole Darling inside basket with 51 seconds left to cut the deficit to 10 points, but Detroit’s Ray McCallum held the ball until late in the shot clock and passed to Jason Calliste, who hit his third 3-pointer of the half to set the halftime margin. McCallum has 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists on 4-4 shooting, 2-2 from 3-point range and 1-1 free throw. Johann Mpondo leads Wright State with 6 points, and even though the Raiders shot 44 percent (good for them), they gave up 10 turnovers in the half, 7 on Detroit steals.
3:53 first: UDM leads 29-20. The Titans finished a 13-2 run to take a game-high 13 point lead on a Jason Calliste 3-pointer with 4:48 left. That gave him 6 points to match Ray McCallum as Chase Simon has 7 and Detroit continues to spread out the scoring while shooting 55 percent (4-9 from 3). Johann Mpondo was fouled on a made layup going into the media timeout, and he has a team-high 6 points. WSU shooting at a good clip at 45 percent, but the Raiders have 9 turnovers (they average a little more than 14 per game).
7:45 first: UDM leads 24-16. The Titans used an 8-0 run to go up by a game-high 10 points at 24-14 on a steal and three-point play from Ray McCallum with 8:13 left. He has 6 points, and Chase Simon leads the team with 7. Johann Mpondo finished a beating of the Detroit press with a dunk to reach 4 points and set the current margin. He leads Wright State. Detroit is shooting 59 percent, while WSU is shooting 41.
11:36 first: UDM leads 16-12. Five different WSU players have scored, including A.J. Pacher, who hit a 3-pointer with 12:25 left. But Detroit responded with an offensive rebound, its third of the game, and a basket to set the margin. Detroit guard Chase Simon is off to a very solid start, with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. WSU is shooting 5-9, and Detroit is making 7-11.
15:34 first: UDM leads 10-7. Wright State has 3 early turnovers against the Detroit pressure, and the Titans got an impressive alley-oop dunk from Doug Anderson and two 3-pointers from Jason Calliste and Chase Simon to take the early lead. WSU is off to a 3-of-4 start from the field.
20:00 first: Wright State starters: John Balwigaire, Matt Vest, Cole Darling, Armond Battle, Johann Mpondo.
PREGAME: Wright State enters today’s game with two straight losses, and the Raiders will be without three players. Leading scorer Julius Mays (Achilles tendon/calf strain) and fellow guard Vance Hall (concussion) are out because of injury, and forward Tavares Sledge also won’t play because of a coach’s decision. All are here on the trip to Calihan Hall. The teams both have 9-11 records, and WSU is 4-4 in league play, while Detroit is 3-5.

There is no color announcer on the broadcast. This has been the case on every road game. Another example of a second rate program. Is Tavaras Sledge in trouble? Has shown some potential.

This was a sickening road trip. For the few remaining die-hard Raider fans, Billy Donlon owes them an apology. Enough of this “we’re young” nonsense. Of the 4 freshman, only one plays major minutes. Everyone else returns with college basketball experience. And the one freshman that should play, Kendall Griffin, doesn’t even see the court. Arcenaux’s turnovers and poor defense negate any points he scores.

Add to that, and it appears now that the team just quit midway through this game. Obviously Coach is losing his grip on these guys (I mean, getting a Technical when you’re already getting beat by 25 is pathetic.) Same with blaming the officials after losing to UWGB.

For the second time this year I was not able to watch the entire game. Shut the computer down with 8 minutes to go. This is not WSU basketball. It was a meltdown. I’ve defended BD before, but I’m done doing that. Coach, it’s time to start doing things differently.

They have three key injuries on a relatively young team. Detroit is an experienced team and the Horizon League has good parity this year. Each team brings talent and energy. The team has shown signs IE. the Idaho game. I still enjoy watching on the games on the web and I will be going to Hinkle when they come to town. Keep the faith.

Certainly wouldn’t blame Kendall or Jason for going somewhere else, but where did you read/hear/see that info?

WAKE UP PEOPLE..the writing is on the wall, Donolon sucks at coaching and will never, never have a winning season. You can’t just go around thinking you’re God and it’s all going to work out in your favor. He lies and mistreats his players and he expects good out of them. Ask yourself, would you want to come here and play for a useless bunch of coaches and director who could careless about you. Donolon high school coaching coaching skills are pathetic.I would go to a game if I had a free ticket. I’m sick of excuses..D1 means your bring something to the table..you’re a step of above many players, that’s why we are investing in you to play for us. The sophmores are useless..WSU will never be winners, when you do wrong. LOL
