Two Wright State players out for Saturday’s road game against Detroit
Wright State guards Julius Mays (left Achilles tendon/calf strain) and Vance Hall (concussion) will not play in the Raiders’ Saturday afternoon game against Detroit, the school said today.
Mays, a junior, suffered his injury on Jan. 8 against Valparaiso and played in two games last week against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay. He leads the Raiders in points (13.4), assists (2.7), minutes (32.5) and 3-point percentage (42.6).
Mays said earlier this week that he pushed off the heel harder during Saturday’s game against Green Bay, after which he left the game briefly.
He returned to finish with 15 points, including an impressive three-point play with 12.8 seconds left. But Green Bay’s Keifer Sykes sank two free throws with 3.0 seconds left to give the Phoenix a 57-56 win.
Mays missed one other game this season, an 82-54 loss to Ohio on Dec. 17. Since, he has averaged 18.4 points in eight games.
Hall, a sophomore, sustained a concussion in practice this week. He is averaging 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 20.4 minutes per game and is viewed by the coaching staff as one of the team’s strongest defenders. He and Mays have started a combined 27 times in 20 games, with Hall either starting at point guard in place of freshman Reggie Arceneaux or as the third guard in a three-guard lineup with Mays and Arceneaux. Hall started the previous three games.
With their absences, WSU has three guards available who have played at least 10 minutes per game: Arceneaux (9.1 points per game), junior John Balwigaire (5.1) and sophomore Matt Vest (2.6). Two other scholarship guards are available in freshman Kendall Griffin (1.3 points, 7.9 minutes per game) and freshman Jason Cuffee (0.5, 6.9).
Wright State (9-11, 4-4) will be facing a Detroit squad (9-11, 3-5) with two preseason All-Horizon League first team guards on the roster. Ray McCallum, a sophomore and the league’s preseason player of the year, ranks second in the league in scoring (15.3 points per game). Chase Simon, a senior, is fourth (14.9).

Bad news for Julius and Vance. Get healthy quickly! Hope this means Kendall and Jason see some serious playing time. Too bad that they haven’t seen the court more often this year; that would have given them some much needed game experience.
