‘Tyra Show’ says goodbye to fans

After completing five seasons and winning two Daytime Emmy awards, Tyra Banks’ eponymous talk show said goodbye on Friday, May 28.

Tyra decided to end the show to pursue other projects, she explained to fans. One such project is the continuation of her model competition show “America’s Next Top Model,” but she is also working on a new show about beauty and self-image.

Reruns of “The Tyra Show” will continue to air at 3pm and 4pm on the Dayton CW and Cincy CW channels.

Over the years, Tyra has addressed the issues that most women confront at some point in their lives - aging, self-esteem, dating/relationships/marriage, discrimination and health.

And, of course, beauty. What else would you expect a former supermodel to want to talk about?

But Tyra took a decidedly un-shallow approach to the topic. She emphasized that while the modeling world may have certain standards of beauty, that doesn’t mean you have to look like a model to be beautiful.

She often featured guests who were self-conscious about their looks and doled out the pep talks, hugs, tears, and Kleenex. There were plenty of makeover shows, with the transformations geared more toward updating a woman’s look than trying to make her a model.

And Tyra proved she wasn’t off-limits to beauty criticism. She made waves when she ditched her weaves and showed the viewing audience what her real hair looks like. This sparked a continuing debate over the ethics of wearing weaves.

In one episode, she washed her face clean of all makeup to show what she looks like before her “Glam Squad” dolls her up for the stage.

She posed for a second cover of “Sports Illustrated” magazine - 10 years later and several pounds heavier than her first cover, and still smoking-hot.

She often talked about the parts of her body she wasn’t happy with, such as the size of her chest or the dimples in her thighs and butt.

But it all came back to a message of loving yourself, flaws and all.

I’ve been an on-and-off ‘Tyra’ watcher. It was one of those things I’d watch if there was nothing else on, or if I was flipping through channels and she had an interesting guest.

I admire the character of Tyra. The woman who is ridiculously good-looking but still admits her flaws, the woman who fought the media when they pointed out that she’d gained weight, the woman who champions the underdog and can make anyone feel pretty. That’s a good role model.

But the thing that stops me from calling myself a fan of hers is that I can’t help wondering: how much of it is just an act? What is she like off-camera?

I want to believe she’s just as fun and down-to-earth as she seems on the show, but I fear she’s secretly a diva out to exploit her guests’ insecurities and make herself look more compassionate than she is.

So will you miss “The Tyra Show?” And do you think she’s authentic or just in it for the money?
