Collecting rare in youngest generations
As a diehard collector of Snoopy items, I was saddened by a report that says kids aren’t collecting anymore. It’s those darn computers and video games. “Kids used to collect stamps because it was a glimpse into a world you couldn’t see just by turning on a computer (as they can today),” Will Seippel, CEO of WorthPoint, a collectibles database told the Christian Science Monitor. “If you were growing up in Baltimore, a stamp was a way to learn about Cameroon.” Adult collectors are so concerned about this they are giving away free items to woo kids to collect stamps, baseball cards and figurines. People collect for three reasons - nostalgia, decorative purposes, and investment. Collecting teaches children about maintaining objects and sharing their collections with friends and family. It also offers lessons in fair trading, the story said. Agreed. But collecting likely has also slowed because of saturation of, well, things. When I was 5, my exposure to Snoopy was a Christmas special here and a Great Pumpkin cartoon there. Now he, Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob Square Pants, Spiderman and whatever movie is tied in with Burger King or McDonalds are everywhere. So there’s really no reason to cherish a special item if it’s not very special, is there?
