A delicious-sounding rose-wine tasting Tuesday at BOTH Arrow Wine & Spirits stores, and wayyy at the end of this amazing list, a very interesting-sounding Dayton Brewing Heritage Tour and Beer Collectibles Event coming up in early June. Great stuff!

Don’t forget the Fleurs et Vin this Sunday May 20, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Carillon Historical Park, benefitting AIDS Resource Center Ohio and Carillon. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event. Previous events have been worth the price of admission FOR THE FOOD ALONE. Click here for more info.

And a hearty, robust thank-you to the Dayton-based wine listserv who compiles this consistently amazing list and shares it with Uncorked!

Wine duel in the springtime sun:

From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight (Wednesday 5-16-12), Arrow Wine & Spirits’ Far Hills Avenue store will host a tasting of Silver Oak and Twomey Cellars wines with Brand Manager Ryan Johnson. Yes, I said Silver Oak.

Meanwhile, at precisely the same time as the Arrow tasting, tonight’s tasting at Bruning’s Wine Cellar in Beavercreek features a lineup of five beauties I’d like to get to know better (and you’ll have a second chance Saturday if you don’t make it today), including 2010 Jean Marc Brocard Bourgogne Blanc Kimmeridgien; 2010 JJ Christoffel Erben Riesling Kabinett Urziger Wurzgarten; 2010 Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Reserve Willamette Valley; 2010 Jean-Claude Lapalu Cote de Brouilly; and 2008 Woodward Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series Columbia Valley. That’s quite a selection, from some of the best producers in their regions. For beer enthusiasts, Stone Old Guardian Barleywine is the featured beer on the tasting bar tonight.

And another thing: Have you purchased your ticket to this Sunday’s Fleurs et Vin yet? It will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. (live auction starts at 4) at Carillon Park.

Ohio wines shine in Ohio Wine Competition

Ohio wineries enhanced their reputation as producers of world-class wines at the Ohio Wine Competition held last week at Ohio State University’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster.

The competition, first held more than three decades ago, attracted 268 entries from Ohio commercial wineries, the same number as last year, according to Todd Steiner, enology program manager and outreach specialist at the OARDC who oversees the competition.

I was one of 10 people who served as judges for the competition, and my five-judge panel swirled, sniffed, swished and spit about half of the wines during the initial round of “blind-tasting” evaluation over two days. The entries included some perfectly balanced, intensely flavored and very impressive reds, whites, pinks and fruit wines. On the competition’s third day, judges evaluated a couple dozen wines as part of the “Best of Show” judging of those entries that received the highest marks in the initial rounds.

Kenneth Bement, owner of Wet Your Whistle wine shop in Madison, OH, judges the championship flight

I’ve been trying to keep tabs on Ohio’s winemaking progress and prowess, but I must admit, I was surprised at the across-the-board quality of whites, the depth of flavor of some Ohio reds coaxed from hybrid grapes such as chambourcin, and the surprising range of fruit wines, including lip-smacking examples of blackberry, peach and pear wines. And since when were so many Ohio wineries producing beautifully balanced, not-too-sweet, and eminently refreshing Pink Catawbas? There were pleasant revelations throughout the judging.

Best-of-show winner

In the end, the “Best of Show” award was won by the Raven’s Glenn 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, a smooth, concentrated and classy red produced from a winery in West Lafayette, Ohio, near Coshocton. The wine is labeled “American,” a non-specific appellation that suggests that the grapes that produced it could have come from somewhere other than Ohio — perhaps California, in this case. A woman who answered the phone at Raven’s Glenn this morning said no one was immediately available to answer questions about the wine.

To its credit, the Ohio Wine Competition doesn’t discriminate against wines that are made by Ohio wineries out of grapes or juice that comes from outside Ohio, and it’s a fairly common practice for those Ohio wineries that do not grow all of their own grapes to augment their supply of juice from vineyards in New York, Michigan, California, Washington, or elsewhere. While this competition made it abundantly clear that Ohio wineries are producing better red wines than ever, many from Ohio-grown grapes (a 2009 estate-grown Debonne Vineyards 2009 Grand River Valley Chambourcin captured gold and was a strong contender in the finalists’ round), reds from warmer regions such as California are still hard to beat in a blind tasting such as this.

Overall, at least 66 of the Ohio Wine Competition’s entries were submitted as part of the Ohio Quality Wines (OQW) program, meaning that at least 90 percent of the grapes were grown in Ohio, according to Steiner. Nearly half — 29 — were awarded either a silver or gold medal. Those included a 2011 Vidal Blanc from Valley Vineyards in Warren County (a “consensus” gold, meaning that all five judges on its initial panel awarded a gold medal to the wine), and a gold-medal-winning non-vintage Traminette from Vinoklet Winery in suburban Cincinnati, among others.

Todd Steiner

Steiner, who works with wineries in every corner of the state to help boost the quality of wine grapes grown here in Ohio, was philosophical about what some perceived as the “best-of-show” victory of a wine made from out-of-state grapes.

“The chips fall where they may in a competition like this,” Steiner said. “Ohio still has an emerging wine industry. We’re still evolving, we’re still putting high-quality fruit into the ground.”

That was made even more apparent at a banquet held at the Wooster Inn, where Steiner served up three “test-batch” wines made in the OARDC’s cellars: A 2011 LaCrescent, made from a white-wine grape that originated in Minnesota and which Steiner said shows great promise in the Buckeye state; a 2011 Chambourcin Rose; and a 2011 Syrah. All were very, very impressive.

Here are some of the other category winners from the competition:

Best White: 2011 Ferrante Riesling

Best Rose: 2011 Henke Cellars Blush

Best Red: Raven’s Glenn 2009 Sangiovese

Best Fruit Wine: Ferrante Raspberry Blanc

Best Dessert Wine: Breitenbach Wine Cellars Solara Cream Sherry

Best Sparkling Wine: Meier’s Wine Reiem Spumante

First of all, you DO already have the Fleurs et Vin on your calendar, don’t you? It’s Sunday May 20, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Carillon Historical Park, and it benefits AIDS Resource Center Ohio and Carillon. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event, and a few of us old-timers have been along for the ride, from when it started at Carillon, bounced around to Wegerzyn and Lincoln Park (Fraze Pavilion) and returned to the Carillon. Good times indeed. Click here for more info.

Then, feast your eyes upon the following wine (and beer) tastings and events list that comes to Uncorked via the indefatigable efforts of the Dayton-based wine listserv that compiles it. If we aren’t the wine epicenter of the universe, then what is?

There are enticing wines galore on this stunning wine-tastings-and-events list that comes to Uncorked courtesy of a Dayton-based wine listserv, but what really caught my eye were the Rhone beauties, which are sprinkled throughout but then bunched up gloriously in a Bella Vino wine tasting on Saturday. Is there another region that produces such a diverse array of fascinating, delicious wines from so many varietals and blends, and at prices that compare favorably to other prestigious wine-producing regions? I think not. Read, taste, enjoy.

KETTERING — The Dayton Beer Company, 912 E. Dorothy Lane at Ackerman Blvd., will pour its first brews for the public starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 17, according to owner Pete Hilgeman.

PETE HILGEMAN

“We are proud to be part of the renewal of Dayton’s rich brewing history,” Hilgeman said. The label on each type of beer made by the new microbrewery celebrates aspects of Dayton’s heritage, such as Inventors IPA and Patterson Pale Ale, named for NCR founder John Patterson.

The microbrewery that we first told you about in January “is in full brewing mode,” owner-brewmaster Hilgeman said, and is shooting to offer samples and sales of five of its year-round brews during opening weekend: Blonde Ale, Hefeweizen, Pale Ale, IPA and Porter.

Pending inspections, the brewery’s outdoor patio should be available for the opening weekend festivities, Hilgeman said.

The hours during the opening weekend will be 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, May 17-18, and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 19. Going forward, the hours will be Tuesday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday.

Snacks such as pretzels, chips and beer nuts will be available during opening weekend, and visitors are welcome to bring in their own food, Hilgeman said. In the future, the microbrewery owner hopes to enter into partnerships with a handful of local restaurants that would deliver food from their menus to the microbrewery.

Hilgeman is a 2005 Alter High School graduate who holds a marketing and international business degree from the University of Cincinnati. The Dayton Beer Company is located adjacent to a UDF convenience store in a space that has been vacant for years and which formerly housed a Big Sky Bread Co. lunch spot.

DAYTON — Toxic Brew Co., the brewpub coming to 431 E. Fifth St. in the Oregon Historic District that we first told you about a year ago, has won a pivotal ruling from the Dayton Landmark Commission to build a patio in front of the brewpub and is moving toward a late-spring opening.

“We got over a big hurdle and got our outside design approved,” said Shane Juhl, Toxic Brew’s general manager and brewmaster. “We got our fermentors in place this weekend. Our brewhouse that is getting manufactured by Gem City Metal Technology should be done in 2 weeks. We are hoping to start brewing by the end of May and have a soft opening by the end of June.”

Juhl and his business partners have spent the last year navigating the licensing and permit processes and renovating the building that will house their brewpub. Like several other Miami Valley entrepreneurs who are preparing to open craft breweries or microdistilleries in the region, the founders of Toxic Brew are expected to benefit from a change in state law that makes it easier to offer samples of and to sell their products from on-site tasting rooms. The new law took effect March 22.

Where, you might ask, can you find Hoppin’ Frogs and Wild Horses coexisting peacefully, even happily, together? Why, right here on the best wine-and-beer-tastings-and-events-listing in all of southwest Ohio, which comes to Uncorked courtesy of the Dayton-based wine listserv moderator who compiles it. In this case, the Hoppin Frogs — four of them, in fact — will be served up tonight at the Washington Twp. Arrow Wine & Spirits (and beers, apparently) store, while the Wild Horses — three of them — will be poured BOTH tonight AND tomorrow afternoon at Little Sonoma down in West Chester (along with two Hot to Trot wines in a Derby Day special tasting — VERY nice).

Other highlights include a tasting of 15-plus Italian wines at Arrow’s Far Hills store Saturday and four rose-style wines Tuesday night at Rue Dumaine. Ain’t no bout a-doubt it: This wine community ROCKS. Read on and see if you agree.

MORROW — Valley Vineyards, which two months ago unveiled its new line of Cellar Dwellers craft beers brewed at the winery, has applied for a state license that would allow a microdistillery to begin operations under the same roof.

Joe Schuchter, director of sales and marketing a third-generation member of the family that founded Valley Vineyards, said plans for a distillery are still in the early stages and call for production of grappa, vodka and a bourbon-style whiskey. The first bottles could be rolled out “within a year,” Schuchter said.

A new state law that took effect March 22 ushered in a relaxation of state regulations that allows microbreweries and small distillers to offer samples of their products in a tasting room and to offer limited sales from tasting rooms. The new law already has triggered substantial interest among Dayton-area entrepreneurs who are in various stages of development of small distilleries and microbreweries.

Donniella Winchell, executive director of the Ohio Wine Producers Association, said she is not aware of any other winery-brewery-distillery combination in the state of Ohio. Debonne Vineyards in Madison, Ohio, east of Cleveland, last year was the first Ohio winery to begin producing a line of beers from its Cellar Rats Brewery. And Woodstone Creek in northern Cincinnati has produced an extensive line of both wines and spirits, including vodka and bourbon-style whiskey, for several years since its founding in 1999.

The addition of a distillery has a “green” component of sorts, as it will allow Valley Vineyards to use some of the natural byproducts of fermenting wine — the leftover “must” of grape skins, seeds and solids from which grappa is made — and the grains and other solids left over from brewing beer from which alcohol can be distilled. The winery will be getting additional use out of what was essentially a waste product, Schuchter said.

The expansion of Valley Vineyards’ business has already had a positive economic impact.

“We’ve already hired three new people,” Schuchter said. “We were stuck at 15 to 18 employees for about 15 years, and we now have 21 employees,” with tentative plans for additional hiring as the distillery nears completion.

Valley Vineyards’ venture into the beer market has been warmly received by its customers, who consumed 275 gallons of Cellar Dwellers brews at a Feb. 21 unveiling at the winery, according to Steve Shaw, the winery’s brewmaster who is also Schuchter’s uncle. Beer sales in the first two months have tripled projections, Shaw said last week during a beer dinner at Jay’s Restaurant in Dayton.

Valley Vineyards Winery and Brewery’s annual festival, A Taste of Warren County, will be held June 2 at the winery and brewery at 2276 E. US 22 & 3, Morrow.

It amazes me how beer tastings have infiltrated and are slowly taking over this wine-tastings-and-events list that comes to Uncorked courtesy of the Dayton-based wine listserv. But after attending and thoroughly enjoying last night’s Valley Vineyards “Cellar Dweller” beer dinner at Jay’s Restaurant, where Jay’s Executive Chef Chris Cavender and Valley Vineyards Brewmaster Steve Shaw nailed some great food-beer combinations across a multi-course dinner, I’ve got to admit: there’s a whole ‘nother universe of appreciation out there in the brave new world of craft beers. And this list increasingly offers plenty of opportunities for exploration.

But I haven’t crossed over to the dark side entirely. The Rhone wine luncheon tomorrow (Saturday April 21), also at Jay’s, beckons …

DAYTON — Jay’s Restaurant, 225 E. Sixth St., will host a charity fundraiser wine event from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22. The food-and-wine event is titled “For the Love of Wine” and will benefit Camp Emanuel, a southwest Ohio summer camp for hearing-impaired and developmentally impaired youths. Dozens of wines will be sold through both live and silent auctions, and the 36th annual event includes a buffet-style lunch and the opportunity to sample from more than 40 wines. Tickets are $55 per person. Contact George Punter at (937) 436-3424 or Nan Crawford at (937) 312-1012 for tickets and information.

Here’s the “beyond the facts” part: I’ve attended this event for a few years now, and it always hits the right note. It’s a good time for a great cause.

Buckeye Distillery at 130 W. Plum St. in Tipp City — which is not related to Buckeye Vodka, produced in Dayton — will host a grand opening of sorts today, April 16 to celebrate its newfound ability to sell the distillery’s fruit-infused liqueurs directly to the public, according to owner Aaron Lee.

Buckeye is one of several Miami Valley distilleries benefitting or soon to benefit from a change in state law that we wrote about in Sunday’s paper in a story entitled “New distillers law could boost state economy”.

Lee will offer his Buckeye Cherry Liqueur and Buckeye Raspberry Liqueur during the grand opening, and a third product, Blackberry Liqueur, will be available starting May 1, Lee said.

The distillery’s new retail operation is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call (937) 877-1901 or go to www.buckeyedistillery.com.

New Miami County distillery resurrects family's history

<!--

BETHEL TWP., Miami County — A sixth-generation Miami County woman and her husband have built a distillery on the very land where her ancestors produced rye whiskey for 100 years until Prohibition put an abrupt halt to the family business in 1919.

Melissa Duer and her husband Joe Duer are just days or weeks away from firing up the same copper-pot stills that her great-great-great-grandfather Elias Staley used to distill rye whiskey in the early 19th century — the same stills that her great-grandfather George Washington Staley hid from nosy federal agents nearly a century later during the height of Prohibition.

The Duers are part of a growing wave of craft distilleries in varying stages of development in multiple corners of the Miami Valley. All are taking advantage of a new state law that took effect March 22 that makes it easier for small-scale distilleries to sell limited quantities (up to two bottles per day per person) and offer samples to the public (up to four pours of a quarter-ounce each) — activities that were prohibited by state law prior to March 22.

The Miami County couple — who named their venture Indian Creek Distillery after the creek that flows through their property, and because that’s the business name Elias Staley used in the early 1800s — will produce two types of rye whiskey, one of which will carry the same Staley Rye Whiskey name that the family produced in the 19th Century. The other spirit will be un-aged and will be called Revolution Rye whiskey. The first bottles of Revolution Rye should be available for sale this summer, with the aged Staley Rye unveiled later this year after spending some seven to eight weeks in 15-gallon oak barrels.

The distillery’s two small, antique copper stills will limit production to small batches, and each batch will be bottled uncut at varying alcoholic proof levels with the intent of “capturing the frontier spirit in a bottle,” Melissa Duer said.

The couple hasn’t set a price yet for the two rye whiskeys. “It’s not going to be inexpensive, but it’s going to be worth the price,” Melissa Duer said.

Although the distillery and tasting room are newly constructed, Amish builders designed the new building to fit in with the much older structures on the Duers’ property, including a grist mill built in 1818. Melissa Duer is the sixth generation of her family to live in the farmhouse on the property.

Among the documents in the Duers’ possession are doctor’s prescriptions from the 1800s prescribing “one quart of your finest whiskey” for various ailments, and a letter from a Civil War soldier requesting a bottle of Staley’s Rye Whiskey be sent to him.

Eventually, the Duers would like to grow rye on their property to use for their whiskeys. And with two daughters and three grandchildren, they have their eyes squarely on the future even as they pay homage to the past.

“This property has been in our family for 200 years, and we’d like it to be in the family for another 200 years,” Melissa Duer said.

For more information, check out the Indian Creek Distillery web site.
