The Miami Valley wine community loses one of its own
The Miami Valley’s wine community lost one of its most colorful and generous members late Saturday afternoon.
Paul Russell, 66, of Kettering, was found dead after his pickup truck crashed on East Sixth Street at the entrance of Jay’s Restaurant, 225 E. Sixth St. He had not been in the restaurant or in the Jay’s Kitchen Door wine shop prior to the crash, and it is believed that he suffered a medical emergency prior to the incident, in which his pickup truck apparently hit a curb and a light pole before ending up on its side in the middle of Sixth Street. He had a prior history of heart-health issues.
Two of my reporting colleagues at the Dayton Daily News have posted a story on the accident at this link.
Paul was a regular at Jay’s Kitchen Door wine tastings on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons, as well as at area jazz clubs and other music venues. He was a former employee of NCR.
Paul had an extensive collection of wines - particularly Bordeaux - and shared bottles from his collection frequently and generously at various wine-related gatherings. A music lover, story teller and occasional curmudgeon, Paul also for several years hosted a Sauternes party during the annual Holiday at Home Parade in Kettering, as his Far Hills Avenue home was on the parade route.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

The last wine-tasting at which I saw Paul was a Black Thursday gathering a week ago at Jay’s Kitchen Door. Paul brought a 1990 Chateau Montrose to share, a former Parker 100-point wine. He expressed surprise when he saw the label — “I meant to bring the ‘90 Margeaux,” he said. “Guess I grabbed the wrong bottle.” That Montrose turned out to be the best wine of the night.
