Boonshoft to host ‘Science of Wine’ tasting event this Saturday

Here is a news release I received from the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, 2600 DeWeese Parkway in Dayton, about its Fourth Annual “Science of Wine” event. I’ve heard good things about this wine-and-food gathering on the museum’s grounds. Read on:

BOONSHOFT HOSTS FOURTH ANNUAL SCIENCE OF WINE EVENT
A casual evening of great food, music and wine
(Dayton, OH) On Saturday, January 29 from 7:00-10:30 p.m., the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery will host The Science of Wine, an event that pairs great food, wine and conversation with a fun and casual environment for adults to learn about the science of wine-making, growing, harvesting and serving.
“This event seems to grow in popularity every year,” notes Kim Allen, member of the Boonshoft Museum Associate Board and Chair of the Science of Wine committee. “Guests not only enjoy the wide selection of wines and fabulous food, but the atmosphere of the Boonshoft Museum really adds to the enjoyment and casual learning environment.”
In its fourth year, the popular event will showcase various aspects of wine at tasting and learning stations, where the wines will be paired with plentiful food, live musical performances, and industry experts who will be on-hand to answer questions and share their knowledge. Each of the stations will take advantage of their unique location in the Museum to focus on specific aspects of wine-making, including sustainable wine practices, the unique vintages produced by cloning and crossing of vines, the pervasiveness - and importance - of grapes in the world, the effects of climate on grape growing, and even the potential health benefits of red wine.
As in previous years, guests will also be treated to presentations on stemware, Valet parking, full open bars and one-of-a-kind Museum activities will be available throughout the evening as part of the all-inclusive $75 general admission fee.
New for 2011, guests will enjoy the latest in planetarium technology at a special presentation in the Caryl D. Philips Space Theater that showcases the fulldome video capabilities of the Digistar 4, a temporary asset at the Museum, as well as fascinating demonstrations on cooking with wine, and coffee preparation presentations from Boston Stoker.
There will be a VIP area located in Science On a Sphere that will feature exclusive food and wine pairings, the soothing sounds of Puzzle of Light, and the amazing technology of the Sphere itself. Featuring 30 additional wines, the focus will be on fine wines from the United States, France, and Italy.
The fifty-six wines selected for the evening were carefully chosen to create a diverse selection for guests. “The importance of not only matching the wines with educational content of presentations, but also meeting the needs of both palates and pocket books was key to the selection process,” says Rob Vonderbrink of Heidelberg Distributing, who worked with six winery representatives to choose vintages available for purchase at Arrow Wine, The Little Store, The Wine gallery & Cafe, and BellaVino.
Wines served will range in price from $9 - $200, and will be paired with an amazing selection of heavy hors d’oeuvres. Guests will also be treated to decadent desserts, paired with a sampling of four dessert wines, before indulging in the spicy aromas of Boston Stoker’s finest brews.
“Given the unique access to industry experts, guests will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the science of wine - or, simply sample some great vintages from wineries across the world,” notes Diane Farrell, Vice President, External Relations at the Boonshoft Museum. The regular ticket price will include 26 wines, and the VIP price an additional 30.
All proceeds from The Science of Wine will benefit the Boonshoft Museum’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs. Tickets are $75 per person and $100 per person for those who would like a VIP package. Reservations are encouraged.
Sponsors for the 2011 Science of Wine are: Heidelberg Distributing, Esther Price, Rieck Services, US Bank, Deloitte, Wine Brokers, E&J Gallo Winery, The San Francisco Wine Exchange, Wente Vineyards, Robert Mondavi Winery, Ste Michelle Wine Estates, Arrow Wine and Spirits, The Little Store, Bella Vino, The Wine Gallery & Cafe, and Boston Stoker.
