The reborn Dayton Wine Fest will showcase Ohio wines this weekend

DAYTON — After a one-year hiatus, the Dayton WineFest will return this weekend over two days — Friday, June 4 and Saturday, June 5 — and this time in a new location: the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.

The event designed to showcase Ohio wines had a six-year run at the 2nd Street Market, where it was sponsored by the former National City Bank (now PNC Bank). But the event was cancelled last year, and there were significant questions about whether it would return.

This year’s festival is sponsored by the Ohio Wine Producers Association, and is designed to showcase Ohio wines: 14 Ohio wineries will be pouring at the event. The participating wineries include the relatively new Brandeberry Winery near Enon in southern Clark County, as well as Valley Vineyards near Morrow in Warren County and The Winery at Versailles in Darke County.

Other participating wineries include: Breitenbach Wine Cellars, Dover; Debonne Vineyards, Madison; Eldchrist Winery, Plain City; Ferrante Winery & Ristorante, Geneva; Firelands Winery, Sandusky; Grand River Cellars, Madison; It’s Your Winery, Akron; Maize Valley Winery, Hartville; Meranda-Nixon Winery, Ripley; Mon Ami WInery & Restaurant, Port Clinton; Wyandotte Winery, Columbus.

Wanda Willis of W2 Event Solutions, who served as the chief organizer of the event when she worked for the former National City and reprising that role for the wine producers association, said the Dayton Wine Fest will be a natural fit for the Boonshoft museum, and said the festival will help educate attendees about the science of wine and Ohio’s winemaking history.

“Visitors to the Dayton WineFest have come to expect ever-increasing quality of wines in a relaxed atmosphere, and that’s what they’ll find,” Willis said. The festival is “an opportunity to support the local economy and the Boonshoft Museum while having a great time at an affordable price,” she said.

Donniella Winchell, executive director of the Ohio Wine Producers Association, said the Dayton wine market’s sophistication, its curiosity about Ohio wines industry, and its support of the festival prior to 2009 led to the decision to resurrect the Dayton Wine Fest.

“Bringing a festive event back to the area will accomplish several purposes: it will allow some of our best wineries to showcase the ever increasing quality to wine sophisticates but also offer wine in a relaxed atmosphere to newbees intimidated by the whole concept of wine,” Winchell said when the festival’s rebirth was announced in April.

The Dayton Wine Fest will be held outdoors, on the museum’s grounds, and proceeds will benefit the Boonshoft. The ticket price ($20 in advance, $25 at the gate) includes 10 sampling tickets and a souvenir glass. Food is purchased separately. Food vendors will include Brock Masterson’s Catering & Events, Unique Eats, Pita Pockets International, Grumpy’s Barbecue and Rismiller Concession.

Musical entertainment will be provided Friday night, June 4 by Khalid Moss, and on Saturday by Dan Rivers; Tim Jennens & Randy Villars; Anne Harpen; and Puzzle of Light.
