Four Dayton bar-restaurants team up for ‘Growler Co-Op’
DAYTON — Beer fans, take note: Four bar-restaurants in the Oregon District-South Park area today unveiled a “Growler Co-Op” that will make it easier for beer lovers to get a half-gallon of premium draught to go.
The four “collaborators” are Blind Bob’s, South Park Tavern, Thai 9 and the Trolley Stop.
A “growler” is a half-gallon container that can be re-used. The empty container can be purchased for $10 from any of the four locations, then can be filled with draft beer at any of the four locations, according to Robert Strong, owner of Thai 9, who announced the Growler Co-Op this afternoon. The price for filling the growlers varies depending on the price of the beer itself, but will usually run from $12 to $30.
“The four members of the co-op try to not have the same beers pouring at the same time, so you can get the best variety,” Strong said in a news release. There currently are 38 drafts total being poured by the four co-op members. Some beers will not be offered for carry-out because they are limited-release, Strong said, and each member will choose which beers will be available for carry-out.
Some other beer bars in the Miami Valley, including Boston’s Bistro & Pub in Harrison Twp. and Peach’s Grill in Yellow Springs, have growler carry-out programs.
Here is the contact information for the four members of the newly unveiled co-op:
— Blind Bob’s, 430 E. Fifth St., 937-938-6405
— South Park Tavern, 1301 Wayne Ave., 937-586-9526
— Thai 9, 11 Brown St., 937-222-3227
— Trolley Stop, 530 E. Fifth St., 937-461-1101

Its a shame that my comments “mysteriously” get removed so I’ll say it again. I love it when Dayton does big-idea things, I hate it when people screw up the implementation. Seriously, give the jugs away. This is about getting people into your 4 bars and increasing sales (they drink while they’re there AND they buy to take home) you you should be doing whatever you can to get them in there. Giving away a $4/your cost branded item (that you’ll be selling back to them full over and over and over for $12-30) is the cheapest advertising ever. Businesses here ALWAYS overlook the longterm in favor of what they think makes or saves money up front and handicap themselves in the process. Its unfortunate to say the least.

As General Manager of SPT I would like to say thank you to all who support the growlers…… this idea goes beyond the glass that holds ales. We are trying to make something bigger in Dayton happen. If you are a big Ale/ Beer fan you know the quality of craft beers in this area. We are proud to be of the same historical part of Dayton and will continue to support our community. Please we are wanting to make all of the Dayton area THE BEST PLACE IN OHIO to enjoy beer, food, entertainment, and a great time! Cheers!

Those are pretty good prices. I’m sick of people saying if its not a 2 or 3$ beer its way too much. If you want GOOD BEER it is made with way more ingredients than that water they call beer at bud and miller.

I’m up for getting a growler just for a souvenir! … I will definitely be filling it though! Why, when businesses in Dayton do something cool, are people so quick to put it down!? I love this idea and for anyone that likes good beer and local businesses, this is fun. People need to get out of the chain restaurants and support their local independents!

The other half of this is that the growlers I’ve bought are mostly from places that are actually doing the brewing. As much as I love South Park et. al. for beer and food selection, they’re not brewpubs. And here again, if most brewpubs will sell you and an empty growler for five bucks or less, $10 for an empty is too much.

To O_o: Chappy’s Tap Room and Grille has 30 taps, with 28 of them being non-domestic water (I mean beer). Try it out!!!!

I have growlers from NJ and PA which I fill in CT, PA and NJ. That is how it ought to be. Otherwise, one is wasting glass. My best growler has no label. A great system I recommend for Ohio. The law ought fairly to be amended.

I think its a great idea. Your paying a one time fee for a growler, then can bring it to four different bars. How is that too much to pay? Apparently its approved and since it has four business logos on the growler you have more variety. Unless you know of a bar in the Dayton area with 38 taps, I fail to see your logic. I have no problem giving my money to four businesses.

I called around and it sounds like they’ve got a co-branded growler that they want you to purchase. I’ve been told before there’s some question on the legality of filling a growler from one business with the beer from another but I don’t know how true that it. $10 is more than I’m willing to pay for an empty growler, though. I’ve bought plenty for half that or less.

Null, You can only use the growlers that we have available. State law requires name on the growler. Sorry, hope to see you soon.
