Chris Wright’s Spirited Session

Chris Wright was moving forward and backward, then side to side in a spirited half-court workout with Dayton Flyers assistant coach Anthony Solomon some two hours before UD met Cleveland State in an opening round game of the NIT Wednesday night at UD Arena.

The Arena was nearly deserted — only Solomon and Wright were on the court — but it was an encouraging sign for the injured freshman stand-out, his team and Flyers fans everywhere.

Although some UD insiders have said the 6-foot-8 forward is done for the season, he may actually be close to returning to the court. In fact, before the game one UD administrator said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Wright get a little bit of playing time in the next game should the Flyers get by Cleveland State.

First though he needs to work out with the full team. He hasn’t fully practiced with the Flyers — much less played — since he fractured a bone in his right ankle during a Jan 9 game with Rhode Island. Previously he’d missed the Flyers Dec. 22 game against Loyola with a foot injury.

Wednesday night he participated in lay-up drills and stretched on the court before the game and at halftime.

During the earlier session with Solomon, he appeared to move pretty well.

Brian Gregory is the answer. He brought Chris Wright and Brian Roberts to Dayton. If he has Wright all year …we are a top 25 team. Now he has Dayton’s best talent staying home. Everyone who ripped on Gregory during the A-10 collapse now knows they were wrong.

This is like the a War General showing up after the battle has been lost and thinking he can rally the troops. If they wanted to take chance, Wright should have played the A-10 Tourney. Why bother now. We’re not even on ESPN2 for cry pete.

The Flyers have already had one traumatic experience when not chosen to the ncaa tournament after starting the season 14-1 .The Flyers do not need another devastating injury to one of their standout players by putting Chris Wright into any game of the nit even the championship game if the Flyers get that far.Even if Chris was cleared to play he would not be 100% healthy and i would rather the Flyers lose the championship game of the NIT and have a healthy Chris Wright for next year than to win the NIT and have a possible career ending injury to Chris in the process.Chris along with huelsman and johnson and the great recruiting by Brian gregory this past season shows great hope for the Flyers next season and for years to follow. I am just sorry that Brian roberts did not get a chance to shine in an NCAA TOURNAMENT game the way he has been able to for the Flyers the last 4 years. We will miss you brian. Gary B.

UD doesn’t need Wright right now. Shut him down for the year and play out the season with the remaining team. UD tried to rush Wright back the first time and he ended up with a broken ankle. Don’t take the chance of causing a career ending injury.
