New, locally owned restaurant to open on Brown Street

Amy Beaver’s reasons for opening her own restaurant are simple and straightforward:

“I love to cook, and I love to take care of people. I’m always feeding my friends,” Beaver said.

Soon, perhaps in early March, Beaver and her business partner, Sarah Dudley, will open the Butter Cafe at 1106 Brown St. near the University of Dayton, in a location that formerly housed the Dolcessa gelato shop. A sign in the window alerts passers-by that the breakfast-and-lunch eatery is coming soon, and promises free-range eggs and chicken, grass-fed beef, and locally produced vegetables.

Beaver, who lives in Oakwood, said offerings will include donuts, “designer” cupcakes, pancakes, beef hamburgers and turkey burgers, and a special-recipe macaroni & cheese. The restaurant will include gluten-free menu items and several vegan items, in part because vegans “have very limited options” along the Brown Street strip dominated by pizza, chicken-wing and sub sandwich restaurants, Beaver said.

The dishes she’ll serve at Butter Cafe will reflect how she eats at home, Beaver said. “Cleaner food tastes better,” she said.

Beaver, whose family has been in the restaurant business in South Carolina for 25 years, said the Butter Cafe’s location near UD and Miami Valley Hospital attracted her interest.

“We’ve had this idea for years,” she said. “We looked at different locations, but nothing worked out. This location was the best.”

The restaurant has no phone number yet. Beaver said the Butter Cafe’s hours aren’t set, but it will open early — 6:30 or 7 a.m. — and stay open through mid-afternoon.

Perspective. It’s all about perspective. To me, butter makes me think farm-fresh, wholesome, homemade, etc… Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I suggest that instead of grousing over the name of the place, go in and try it out, then you can share your opinion about the place.

Ate at Butter Cafe today. Food was wonderful. We tried the French Toast Shish Kabob and the Talapia Sandwich. Also had the strawberry lemonade. Food, price and service were great. Tables are a bit small and the high cafe seats appear a bit wobbly for older folks but will definitely go back.

Butter Cafe sounds amazing!!! Fresh wholesome food made with love and care is just what Dayton needs as there aren’t many options out there. I love the name as well. Just because these gals are offering fresh wholesome food doesn’t mean everything is going to be super healthy…come on people they’re going to have mac & cheese on the menu, think about it. I think the concept and name are delightful. I can’t wait to come have a wonderful meal. Good luck gals!!

Seriously.Really? I have never read more whinny baby comments about stuff people don’t know about! Has everyone forgot the saying ” Its like butter?” That’s what I think of when I hear it, as well as butter in moderation is better for you than overly processed filled with crap margarine! And to have a local business that supports local businesses…hello! Some of you guys are totally nit-picky! I can’t wait to go! And could care less if the place is called Crap On A Plate.Every local resturant deserves time to adjust to its surroundings. So settle down folks on the negatives! geesh.

Butter Cafe will be a welcome addition to Brown Street, both for UD and MVH. I will lcertainly be one of the first to visit. We need an early place for breakfast on Saturday. Thanks for coming to the community.

I love the idea and as long as you have one service, you are sure to stay in business. Here are some hints for the much needed service: drunk college students, late night hungers and even the occasional sober UD student, too lazy to walk or drive. Times up; you gotta deliver! Trust me, delivery will come in handy to college students AND Miami Valley hospital employees.

A truly unique and innovative concept. A restaurant with choices for very differentiated palates. Yet,family, friends or co-workers can meet together in one place and not have to op-out or settle for something one would choose otherwise IF given a choice. Whether it’s healthy or not, it is ones’own prerogative and Butter Cafe’s concept will fill a nitch long overlooked in the restaurant business. I believe this concept could change the industry for the better. Best wishes Ladies!

A curious name as “butter” doesn’t exactly scream out health. Though maybe you can lure so of Burger King’s customers over with the promise of more fatty foods. Never thought I’d see the word vegan anywhere around Brown St., maybe there’s hope for Dayton after all.

OMG! Who cares about the name! If they have good food, who cares? Plus All-Natural does not mean low-fat. Get out of the hole you have been living in and get your facts straight. Cupcakes and Macaroni and Cheese contain a lot of BUTTER!

Better stay open more than hours during the weekday. Most food service competition in the area are open long hours and the breakfast customers probably will not generate enough business. Lunch may be good, but the UD crowd could produce business during the evening hours, especially late night breakfast and dinner after the party or studying. There are alot of options to capture business with a unique menu but YOU will have to put in the long hours. Best of luck to you.

This will be about 10 minutes from my home so I’d love to try it — IF it’s open weekends. If Butter Cafe is only open M-F, I’ll never have the opportunity to eat there. And I’d rather have a little bit of butter made from cream vs margarine made from chemicals I can’t pronounce.

For the people who’ve posted who needed gluten-free food, there is a place in Miamisburg that is 100% gluten-free. My sister in law has celiac’s and it’s a great place. I’m blanking on the name but it’s in downtown Miamisburg, can’t miss it!

There’s a Gluten Free restaurant in Miamisburg called Sinfully Gluten Free and Outback Steak House has a gluten free menu also.

Just take your current sign and write beside it at an upward swoosh the words: (The no-so fat) butter cafe.. I of course should get a one time royalty meal out of the deal for the added name used..LoL Just kidding.. Hold the butter! Good luck

So, you are going to offer free range chickens, organically fed healthy diets I presume. Then you are going to round up these perfectly happy, healthy, chickens and their offspring and kill them. It seems like you should concentrate on using the miserable animals raised in miserable conditions to be truly humane. Put them out of their misery and let happy chicks live. Sarcasm.

The name makes it seem homey, with old fashioned comfort food. All you anorexic fanatics out there need to get a grip.

Your concept sounds wonderful….offeringvegan and gluten-free menu items will remove the “veto” vote when several people choose a place to eat. However, PLEASE consider changing the name…it just doesn’t go with the healthy, wholesome image you propose to project.

The menu is perfect for… Yellow Springs. It’s sounds too hippy-like for the UD area. Hippy is slowly going pase’. It don’t peak my interest. Nevertheless, I wish them luck.

Love the idea of free range food and natural ingredients. The food in the US is way to processed. However when I think of butter and particularly Butter Cafe, I think of finding a heart surgeon. Try a different name.

BUTTER Cafe will not lure me (and others) to your new restaurant. You describe your restaurant with wholesome details (free-range eggs…grass-fed beef), so why would you choose “butter” as your lead-in to your name?? What are you thinking??

By Susan

February 1, 2010 11:25 AM | Link to this

Please, make a decent looking sign to let people know you are coming. The hand-made by your five-year-old one in your windows now is not good enough and lacks credibility. Good luck though.

I love the name. Its perfect with your farmer diner theme. Do add steak to your items to go along with eggs for breakfast. Farmers who provide your local products eat meat. Dont make people feel ashamed to order meat in your vegan optional diner. Have lots of options to feed all kinds of people. push local. buy local. good luck.
