Kettering pizza restaurant closes
The Figaro’s Pizza restaurant that opened in February at 1625 W. Dorothy Lane has closed.
A hand-written sign alerts customers that the restaurant at the northwest corner of South Dixie Drive and West Dorothy Lane in an “out-lot” in front of the Super Wal-Mart store is closed for business. The restaurant’s phone has been disconnected, and the Figaro’s franchise co-owner, Chris Gray of Kettering, could not be reached.
But in an interview in his restaurant in July, about five months after his restaurant opened, Gray acknowledged the Dayton area’s competition for the pizza dining dollar was fierce and growing more intense. A Little Caesar’s pizza restaurant opened nearby soon after his Figaro’s franchise — which was new to the Dayton area — opened in February.
“It’s hard out there right now,” Gray said at the time. “It’s difficult to get people to try a new place.”
Gray, a 1999 graduate of Centerville High School who worked for six years in management for the LaRosa’s pizza chain, said he originally envisioned opening up several other Figaro’s locations around the Dayton area, but acknowledged in July that he was “not even close” to picking out expansion sites.
Figaro’s offered both cooked and take-and-bake pizzas, as well as sandwiches and calzones. When it opened, it employed 18 people.

I have eaten pizza all over the world and I have to agree that Marion’s is about the worst there is. The best I have EVER had is Hoagie’s. Not New York, Not Chicago, just the best!

You have to be from here to think that Marions is the best Pizza in the world. If you are not from here, then you know it is nasty.

I don’t know why people like Marion’s pizza..you can get better in the frozen section of the supermarket. We’ve lived here for about 2 years…so far the best in the area are Jimmy’s Italian Kitchen and Deweys. Both are different styles and atmospheres but both good in there own way.

Marion’s hands down is the best pizza. I love the way they prepare it/bake it/slice it! It’s the first stop we make when we get back to Dayton.

Never heard of Figaro’s. Sorry to hear of their demise. Best pizza nowadays? Papa Murphy’s. Best pizza ever? NOT Marion’s! Did you ever have one of the monsters that the Kettering Village Inn served? For $6.00??? Amazing pizza. KVI’s was the best. Whata funand funky place that was. Many good memories!

I worked at a papa Murphy’s for a year and I thought it was a joke at first but after making a few of my own combos I won’t go back to anything else. Fresh dough, fresh veggies! The best is the gourmet vegetarian with pink sauce and extra mushrooms! :D

I dont know about Figaros, But Ive been trying a lot of eating places and getting a pleasant server for a woman eating alone is like pulling teeth! im always pleasant,But my business, And your tip or lack of one,Depends on servers showing at least a little respect.Maybe places would stay open longer If managers insisted on this.

The Dayton area in general has to have more pizza places per person than any other town in the country. So many have come and gone. We’ve enjoyed Rocky’s in Beavercreek for over 30 years. They haven’t delivered in a few years, but the ingredients are always fresh, and the crust is Dayton style thin. Donatos does a pretty good job among the national chains.

Troni’s Pizzeria and Restaurant in Kettering is the best for Italian food and pizza in particular - they get as close to NY pizza as you cah come in southwestern Ohio. Dewey’s is a close second.

The Village Inn Pizza Parlor in Kettering - yes they had good pizza. I used to work there, one of my first summer jobs as a teenager. The pizza was great, but by the end of the summer, I couldn’t look at another pizza. When I was in high school (60’s), Cassanos was a great pizza and also did good subs. Ah, the good old days!

nyc - You’re not a true New Yorker! Lombardi’s in NYC, not in Brooklyn, was the first pizzeria in USA. Pizza is different coast to coast. Flying Pizza and Jimmy’s are my favorites here! Other favorites elsewhere!

What ever happened to Cassano’s? When I lived in Belmont in the ‘70’s that was great pizza. Then Marion’s when I moved to Kettering in ‘72-‘89. I live in Florida now and there’s no place like home for great pizza. The pizza places here all suck!

You people are harsh! Pizza is a personal preference and everyone is different. I’m sorry to hear that someone who had the guts to try and make it in such a competitive market has had to throw in the towel.

The chains are too expensive and the food isn’t that good. The best pizzas are from the places that make them fresh…including the dough. Flying pizza in Centerville is great. Also, Dewey’s by UD.

I will miss Figaro’s. The owner was super nice and really tried hard with great customer service. We loved their pizza and their service and the restaurant will be missed. Best of luck to the owner - hope he has better luck with his next business venture.

Marions Pizza, the Best! Please. While I have had MP’s a few times over the years,it tasted like Cardboard with meat and pizza sauce on it. I rather fix my own at home. For those who say Marions Pizza is the best. Been drinking the Kool Aid too long. Try a pizza from NY or Chitown, then you will say MP, Best.. NOPE!

I would say for Family owned, Kettering’s Italian Oven is the best. Have never even heard of Figaros so no word of mouth promotions. Papa Johns and the other chains make it easy with online ordering.

We were downtown last week and went to Uno’s as a special treat. Never, ever again. My husband’s deep dish pizza ran all over his plate like soup. My French onion soup had swiss cheese just laid on top of the broth; not broiled or melted. We ended up not paying for the meal and just walking away (with management apologies)

It’s a shame. I talked to the owner when I tried the place, and he seemed like a real nice guy. But competition is fierce, people in Dayton are loyal (overly-loyal to the point of mean-spirited blind ignorance in some cases)and the food was decent but not special. Regardless of how much money the chains have, the people working for them likely don’t. Why wish them ill, Dough Boy? They’re your neignbors out of work due to a mindset like yours.

I can tell that most of the people doing the posting on this site, have never tried Donato’s Pizza. Once you have a pizza from Donato’s, you’ll never go back to your old pizza place.

Palermos is good…when you order cheese only. They can’t seem to make a pizza with ingredients that doesn’t get a floppy, soggy crust within 2 minutes after it’s been delivered to your table.

Some of the very best pizza in the area (some would argue the best) is just a half-mile north on Dixie — Palermo’s Pizza. Really excellent. (Usual disclaimers — I have no involvement with the store, etc).

I used to go to the CiCi’s across the street before it closed. Went to Figaro’s one time: Service was poor, employees seemed lazy, price was a bit high. Can’t say I’m shocked at the closure.

It’s hard to break old habits, epecially when you consider that people have been eating Marion’s, Cassano’s and now Donatos for years. When you throw in the Little Ceasar’s $5 Hot ‘n’ Ready this guy had no chance. Maybe he should have had a $5 Hot ‘n’ Ready?

My son and I drove buy once and took advantage of their $6.99 large one ingredient special. All in all, a decent chain “conveyor belt” pizza. Palermo’s just north of them makes the best pizza in the area.
