DLM is international finalist for ‘Best Gourmet Grocer’

A Dayton-area grocer is getting some national — well, international, really — recognition.

Dorothy Lane Market — the locally owned grocer which operates stores in Oakwood, Washington Twp. and Springboro — has been named one of five finalists in the category of Best Gourmet Grocer or Food Hall in the Luxist Readers’ Choice Food Awards.

Luxist, a luxury goods and lifestyle web site and a division of AOL, accepted and vetted nominations for the awards, according to Luxist, which describes DLM as “an Ohio-based nominee that is family-owned and operated is recognized for its great food and service.” Other finalists include Zabar’s in New York City, Harrods Food Hall in London, New York-based Dean & DeLuca, and Whole Foods.

(Now that, my friends, is some rarefied air for DLM to be competing against.)

The winner is determined by online voting. To vote, go to www.luxist.com/awards-vote/food-awards.

Winners are scheduled to be announced Nov. 30.

DLM is a Godsend being located in Dayton, OH with all the urban exodus we have been experiencing the last 3 decades. DLM is one of the few reasons I stay in this town. We are so fortunate to have them.

DLM is such a gem! I was in northern CA this Spring and went to an upscale DLM-type store there called Draeger’s. I assumed that like DLM they would carry free-range meats. And guess what? They didn’t! In northern CA! It made me appreciate how truly unique and wonderful DLM is.

I miss DLM! Since moving out of Dayton, I cannot find another grocery that offers the level of gourmet food and has the service it has. Way to go.

Dave3, interesting to know about Meijer and JungleJims. It is all about quality foods, especially in this age of factory farms and garbage food (see Food Inc. if you want to know how bad it is), and DLM may not be the best in the world for anything but it is definitely the best in Dayton and probably Ohio. Oh, btw, Go BUCKS! :D

Can’t you people read? The contest is not best grocer that carries international food! It is an international contest for “Best Gourmet Grocer.” That said. DLM is great, but Dean & DeLuca is a notch above.

To Dave2, we can order elk and other game meats through DLM. However, the international choices ARE poor, in line with what I’d expect from Kroger — and both are far below Meijer. Meijer being far below Jungle Jims, etc. That said, Dayton, don’t make too big a deal of this. I am very skeptical that NYC would end up with two choices and DLM beats anything from Paris or Brussels.

I know Spring quite well… :) Yeah, it is new in the past year. Right on the waterway across from the theater and the Marriott. The have a wonderful restaurant and a cooking school. Check out hubbellandhudson dot com Chef, a little Appalachia is not all bad. Consider your shopping alternatives. Would you rather go to WalMart??? I would imagine if you went to DLM and asked them to get something specific, they would accomodate you.

Hey Dave, I used to live in Houston. Actually Spring, TX! We moved in 1989 so your grocer was not there yet. We always thought Randals was a good local market.

they must of been intoxicated…to put dlm in the same company with the others….dlm’s ethnic offerings are limited to rural hillbilly and midwest redneck….

I love DLM but there is a place in The Woodlands, TX (just north of Houston) called Hubbell and Hudson that is AMAZING! If you ever get to Houston, stop in. If I could do anything with my life, I would open a store just like that. Quality, quality, quality! Like Pete said, Dayton is lucky to have such a great place to shop at.

This is great for DLM!! Zabar’s is terrific and Hardods in London is in a class by itself. We’re lucky to have such a nice store in our market!
