New, upscale restaurant opens in Piqua

Downtown Piqua has a new full-service restaurant: Toone P’s at the Plaza, located in the recently restored Fort Piqua Plaza at 110 W. High St.

The restaurant is the brainchild of Dennis Black, a Piqua native who has operated Toone P. Wiggins in Sidney for more than four years.

The restaurant serves a “full menu for lunch and dinner,” Black said. The menu is patterned after but not identical to the Sidney restaurant, and includes dinner entrees such as House-Smoked Baby Back Ribs, Scallops Saltimbocca and Tune P’s Tournedos of beef. The lunch menu includes Pulled Pork Sandwich and the “Floribbean” crab cake sandwich, Black said. Burgers and flatbread pizzas are served at both lunch and dinner.

Black’s two sons, Aaron and Adam, are graduates of the Florida Culinary Institute. Aaron serves as chef for the Sidney restaurant, and Adam for the new Piqua location.

Toone P’s at the Plaza seats 70 diners, although it also serves as the primary caterer to Fort Piqua’s banquet facility, which seats more than 300, Black said. The restaurant has 20 employees.

The restaurant opened late last week with little fanfare, Black said, and business has been brisk so far.

“The city and surrounding area have been very enthusiastic about our opening,” the restaurant owner said.

FYI: It’s alright to see someone succeed outside of Dayton, not everyone is trying to “save” the city.

Been to Toone P’s several times already. Prices are very reasonable and the food is good. Obviously Dave and Trent have issues with Piqua. Perhaps they are just ignorant individuals. Give Toone P’s a try, I believe most people will like it.

Look, I like good restaurants as much as the next person. I love L’Auberge, Barnsider, and C’est Tout. Trust me, Toone P’s is a GREAT restaurant. The original branch is in Sidney, and the food and service are superb. I do agree that Piqua is a dump, but take a flyer on this place, it’s definitely worth it. Sandy - I think you need your head checked if you can even try and compare Chicago & Dayton. If Chicago’s a cesspool, then Dayton must be….well, I can’t think of what’s lower than cesspool, but you get the idea.

I would like to see this place go under so they can FINALLY serve Winan’s coffee at events at the Fort Piqua Plaza. Currently, Toone has the sole rights to all beverage services in the building (even if you hire an outside caterer). The services are VERY expensive and Winan’s serves better coffees. Also, this unfinished Toone Wiggins place has been an eyesore ever since the hotel reopened a YEAR ago.

I’ve been to those cities, Sandy. They’re hardly cesspools. And if the companies that happen to be based in those cities want to do something here and provide jobs, why on Earth would you not want them to. Sounds like someone has some sort of inferiority complex.

Been to the Sidney location dozens of times. The food is great. The atmosphere is nice. The staff is very friendly and the wine list is very nice. Good luck Toones!

Piqua is a great community, and there are plenty of residents that can afford Toone”s. Wish them all the best.

I have lived in Centerville, Kettering and now live in Troy and there is no difference in Piqua than any of these other cities. South of Dayton just thinks they a better. I like the North of Dayton crowd much better, not fake like the south. They did however make the wrong choice for the Restaurant to go inside Fort Piqua. Their Restaurant is Sidney is very rude and not accommodating at all. I will give them a try after they have been open 30 days to see if they are any better.

Piqua has had fine dining before - remember the Springs. Then there is also Alliston Manor. It’s nice to see the Fort Piqua Hotel come back to life.

So even, though they already have a location in Sidney, it makes sense to you to move much further South, Sandy? Considering how you don’t want the area to attract jobs from companies outside Dayton, no one should take advice from you as to what to do business-wise.

Piqua’s Miami County neighbors Troy and Tipp City have some fine restaurants. It’s about time Piqua has something.

Ate a couple of times at the Sidney location. The price is a little high but was worth it. Hope they do well in Piqua.

I can tell you 1st handed if you have the surroundings, people and good food the people will come. 40+yrs Jay’s, Colony Club, Annarinos We had a lot of repeat customers coast to coast.

I thought upscale in Piqua meant a drive-thru Waffle House.

By Running a restaurant is hard work.

Running a restaurant is hard work. “Badmouthing” someone/something on the DDN website isn’t (Ryan, Dave, Trent). Good luck Dennis.

Take it easy Dave. How about a little respect for the fine communities surrounding Dayton and the Miami Valley.

I just don’t see the logic in putting an upscale restaurant in a location where there is no market for it. The people in Piqua who could afford Toone P before just drove to Sidney. Locating further south would’ve been a better idea to attract more of a Dayton Crowd

An upscale restaurant in Piqua? Isn’t that like putting a bowtie on a pig?

By Trent

The headline is misleading. Whenever I see “upscale restaurant” and “Piqua” in the same sentence, my brain automatically thinks “Waffle House” or “Ponderosa”, not a place that has a legitimate chef…

Toone P catered our wedding a few years ago. The food is unbelievable and the staff is wonderfully friendly. Try those crab cakes! Best I’ve ever had, and I lived in Baltimore for six years. Good luck Dennis & co.!!!
