New Kettering restaurant to open next week
KETTERING — Sopranos Eatery & Spirits is preparing to open next week — possibly as early as Monday, April 6 — in the building that formerly housed Fields Restaurant at 1222 E. Stroop Road, the restaurant’s co-owner, Mark Powers, said this morning, March 30.
The Italian restaurant’s menu will include pizza, pasta, steaks and seafood entrees, as well as homemade desserts such as tiramisu and cheesecake, Sopranos chef David Whittemore said.
Powers, who most recently served as president of a local car dealership, said he liked the Kettering location and had been looking to return to the restaurant industry. He owned five Famous Recipe restaurants in the Dayton area before selling them in 1999, and his uncle is Duke Morris, who owned Duke’s Golden Ox restaurant on South Main Street in Dayton. Powers’ brother Reece is preparing to open a restaurant in West Carrollton with the granddaughter of the founder of Dominic’s, also a now-demolished restaurant that operated on South Main Street in Dayton.
Mark Powers’ two co-owners of Sopranos are Ray Woodie and John Doty, Powers said.
Powers said he plans to open two more Sopranos, one in northern Montgomery County and one in southern Montgomery County. No deals have been reached on precise locations, he said.
Sopranos will be open daily for lunch and dinner, and the full bar will be open until 1 a.m. daily. The restaurant’s phone number will be (937) 298-2222.

Hey, try getting another local or chain restaurant owner to take such comments to heart and take the time to respond on a blog. Good for you, Bobby! Mamma’s is the best!!

Ok, my review. Nice restaurant. Hostess friendly. Waitress, friendly, helpful, attentive. Service time, very good. Caprese salad, very good. Eggplant parmigiana, very good. Chianti house wine, very nice. Price, hmmm, well comparable, but I always wonder how pasta became so expensive. Bread and oil, ver good. Dessert - Pistachio ice cream/cheesecake, very good, but a bit undersized, but price was lower than other selections. My friend had small canoli, trust me get the large one. Would I go back? Absolutely, it was a nice restaurant and wait staff was very friendly.

Hey, just leaving to go try Sopranos…I’ll let you know. BTW, the DiSalvos deli is absolutely outstanding. The family and people that work the deli are great. Very nice, friendly, what you would expect from a bunch of italians …takes one to know one!!! :)

Its unfortunate for the many of the locally owned restaurants people don’t go to the management and voice their opinion if they aren’t satisfied with the food and service. As a past restaurant owner and a sales consultant to many of the local eateries, I will tell you it is a very tough business. Most “mom & pops” do not have the R&D dollars that that these chains have. So take a look around, there is not as many local eateries that we once had. Just replace a chain once in a while with a trip to your local establishment. As far as Soprano’s goes, you don’t see very many Italian houses that are buying aged steaks and hand cutting them Tony G. It was as good as any that I have had, keep up the good work guys. The wife loved the pasta.

The quality of the food requires a drive-thru. The chef should return to McDonalds!

Unfortunately folks, the comments related to DiSalvo’s unfriendly service is true. My husband and I dine out regularly and the last few times we have been to DiSalvo’s (over the past couple years) we have been very disappointed. Actually, we have walked out saying to each other, “Wow, who do they think they are?” The wait staff acts like they are superior to the customers, like they are doing us a great big favor serving us! I am not sure if mama, papa and the rest of the family are aware of this attitude, or if perhaps if they are guilty of perpetuating it, but we have chosen not to return. We do not wish the family ill will but we will not frequent an establishment where the wait staff is as snooty as theirs. We are excited that a new option for Italian food will be available and plan to go to Soprano’s next week when they open. We are also excited that “Dominic’s” is reopening. As for Debbie’s comments, nobody knows better than I about a family run business: however, unfortunate doesn;t begin to explain the stuffy attitude at DiSalvo’s. Perhaps you can make sure that the folks are aware of what is being said about town so that they can address these issues before it is too late to turn it around. Thank you.

Quetion for Wordell. Are as young and immature as you sound. I didnt realize adults are capable of such unintelligent and unprofessional comments/criticisms of a business. If you have something productive to say about a business struggling in a tough economy, then apply your criticism effectively. I can see why you would receive bad service, because if I owned a restaurant, I would be ashamed to call you my customer with your attitude. You obvisously know nothing about business, because Mamma DiSalvo’s is loved by many, and they are human too. I guess if wishing families and children bankrupt on the streets is your way of providing criticism, then I hope you are a teenager, because you sound like an adolescent moron. Have a good day and best wishes to you and your new found restaurant!

The Dayton area as a whole could use some new blood. The choices for a great dining experience are limited and this will be a breath of fresh air. The Italian restaurants around here are below average at best. Welcome Sopranos!Good Luck to you guys. I know you will do fantastic.

Mary…you think you have it bad with the Mafia Sereotype…try being labeled a boring white guy just because the only thing my Kettering neighbors do is cut the grass. They should be whacked like their weeds…OHHHH!

I never dine in the Mama Disalvo’s restaurant. I usually go over to the deli for lunch. The manager there is very friendly, and I’ve never had a bad experience over there.

Duke’s had the best steak around and the salad….to die for! Mama DiSalvo’s food is equally as good and as for the service….Mama always makes me her special cheese ravioli and I appreciate their outstanding service. Best of luck to both restaurants.

If the place is anything like the Kettering Village Inn it will be a winner. Think I may apply to cook. They loved my cooking at KVI and I miss the happy customers. I usally turn down invitations to Mama’s because of the ‘air’ of the staff.

Add some of Duke’s menu to yours and you will have an instant crowd. Duke’s had great food and Duke was a Great Person. Duke was always nice to his Customers. I wish Duke was sill involved in the Restaurant Business, as he ran such a great place to go out to. What a great Chef,Poet and person!

Partner John Doty is one of the most intelligent men on the planet. 3 PhD’s, WPAFB wunderkind, DOD Team Leader, and first class family man. Any kinks will be ironed out in no time. Give them 6 months and they will be running as smooth as silk. Good luck gentlemen. May the food Gods shine brightly on you.

Having Ray Woodie on board should more than guarantee great Lebanese food, plus his great smile, and look out Mama’s.

DiSalvo’s stays in business because there are more of us than them…and “us” hasn’t told enough of “us” that DiSalvo’s doesn’t like customers. The more I can spread the word about the a—hole “service” I’ve received at this 30 year old monstrosity, the better I’ll feel when they go bankrupt. Hey Debbie…do you ever get your feet entangled in your earings during the “ups and downs” and “unfortunate things” that happen at DiSalvo’s? Bye, DiSalvo’s!!!!!

I agree that Mama Disalvo’s has gone downhill fast as though their customers are a bother. We love the food but we no longer dine in. We always get carry out because the service is horrible now. I will try this new restaurant just because it is down the street and hopefully wants me as a customer.

This is great. We have The Sopranos on Stroop and Marshall, and Badda Bing around Bigger and Whipp. There’s room for a couple more. Artie is due for a comeback. I wish them luck. Hopefully they’ll do better than the much missed La Pergola.

Mamma DiSalvo’s is a family run business trying to stay afloat in a very tough economy. Like all families they have their ups and downs. The DiSalvo family has been in business almost 30 years in the same Kettering location. They are a hard working, tax paying family who tries to their very best all the time. Sometimes unfortunate things happen….

If they serve Duke’s original Golden Ox Lebanese Salad (equally delicious to Dominic’s Garlic House Salad), I’ll fly in from Minneapolis to order it!

I hope to see Silvio, Tony, Paulie, and the rest of the crew at the new place. Kettering needs some new muscle to clean up some of the degenerates that have soiled this town.

A nice home-style Italian place should do just fine in that location. Mama DiSalvo’s is overpriced and VERY unfriendly to customers. I have never been to a ‘service establishment’ and been treated so poorly. Good food plus good service will keep any business open.

Opening a new restaurant in this area, in this economy? Doesn’t Kettering have enough Italian restaurants (past and present)? Best of luck, but I wouldn’t be suprised if the building is, again, for sale next spring.

The name of the restaurant is an unfortunate choice ~ contributes to the stereotype of Italians as ‘mafiosi’.
