Game release marks beginning of football season

Area high school football teams have been holding summer workouts since June 1. The season begins with two-a-days on August 1, a mere 19 days away.

But for me, it’s hard to get excited about football until I get my hands on a copy of the annual EA Sports NCAA Football franchise video game.

I’ve been playing sports games as long as I can remember, and over the years, NCAA has become my favorite. That’s when you know football season is approaching.

On Monday night, I stood in line with about 50 other NCAA fans, awaiting the newest game, NCAA Football 12, at the GameStop on Bechtle Ave. (Yes, I’m almost 29 years old and still wait in line for video games at midnight).

It was clear I wasn’t the only one craving football.

The game is as good as advertised. Deep modes, new tackling techniques, awesome online capabilities … it gets better each year.

It also didn’t stop me from checking out the ratings of our local college football players.

Of course, the NCAA games can’t use the players’ names, but they do a pretty good job of replicating their likenesses (The former OSU starting QB is a 96):

Ratings for area football players (or their apparent likenesses) in NCAA Football 12:

WLS grad Logan Link (Purdue SS, also designated as team captain and impact player) 87

CC grad Brian Wagner (Akron LB, team’s highest rated player) 79

Wayne grad and Springfield native Braxton Miller (OSU) 74

Springfield grad Trey DePriest (Alabama MLB) 71

Springfield grad Austin Moore (Miami, Ohio MLB) 68

Graham grad Nick VanHoose (Northwestern DB) 57 w/ 92 speed.

I couldn’t find WLS grad Collin Link (Purdue MLB) or Shawnee grad Brad Fain (Ohio OL)
